The "You-go-first" mentality indicates certain cautionary attitude, but in essence, it's a procrastinating approach at heart. If you followed the 2024 Tour de France, you saw Tadej go by the finishing line, then Jonas, then Remco, then other cyclists. As an audience, a bystander, you are not part of the actions and nothing happens on the race tracks would affect you.

Busy people tend to assume the "you-go-first" approach when it comes to estate planning. People often say: "My estate is simple."; "I am not rich.", or "Such misfortune would not happen to me, I hope!" There are certain comfort in adapting a bystander approach. However in life, everyone is a participant. No one can watch by the sidelines. Sooner or later, the time will come. It is the worst feeling when your turn comes but you are unprepared. Having an estate plan in place now is the sure way to ensure your assets passs down to your relatives, friends or loved ones in an orderly manner.

Anyone between 29 and 44, chances are he/she is subscribed to YouTube, Facebook, has a digital walet and choses to skip paper statements on everyday spendings. Many millennials and baby boomers no longer receive paper statements. They do all of their banking on their smart phones, and they have money parked in things like Venmo, which do not even have an option for paper statements.

It has become a new challenge for a fiduciary to discover these assets in today's digitized financial world, whereas in the past, a fiduciary may wait a few months for all the statements to come in the snail mail.

In addition to the difficulties associated with discovering traditional assets, we have a whole new category of assets to contend with now: digital assets. They include the files on our computers, the messages in our email accounts, the data in cloud applications like Dropbox and Google Drive, and the photos stored in online accounts such as Shutterfly, Instagram, and Photobucket.

To circumvene the new challenge, working with digital assets nowadays requires a more comprehensive, new approach to the way things were. Be sure to update your estate plan to include and allow your fiduciary access to your digital assets.
