A federal judge just struck down a sweeping visa ban, USCIS is about to reject an entire form with zero grace period, and scammers are using AI to impersonate immigration attorneys. Let’s get into it!
1. Federal judge strikes down 75-country immigrant visa ban!!
Good news first! Back in January, the State Department paused immigrant visas from 75 countries, on the theory people from those countries would become a “public charge.” A federal judge just struck the whole thing down, calling it “contrary to law” and outside the Secretary of State’s authority. The law requires an individualized look at each applicant, not a blanket denial by nationality. The administration can appeal (and we know they will).
2. USCIS will reject old I-485 editions starting September 18, no grace period!
Mark your calendars. Starting September 18, USCIS will only accept the new edition of Form I-485, tied to the new public charge rule. File the old edition on or after that date and it gets rejected. No grace period, no exceptions.
3. Scammers are using AI to impersonate immigration attorneys
We knew this would happen, but still, this is pretty scary. Scammers are using AI to impersonate real immigration lawyers, complete with names, photos, and fake Zoom “hearings,” to trick vulnerable immigrants into paying for services that don’t exist. One attorney found over 6,600 fake videos and profiles tied to his identity taken down in June alone. For practitioners: If you haven’t Googled your own name and firm lately, this is your sign.
