While COVID is no longer a global pandemic, it is still a serious medical issue. Today, OPLaw has been struck by it; our staff has been diagnosed with COVID. As a result, we will be closing our doors and be isolating per CDC policy. We will answer clients upon our return.

It is with mixed feelings that we announce the departure of Rebecca Otey from OPLaw. Rebecca has been offered a great opportunity with the federal government and started in that position today. While we will miss her in the office, we're excited and proud that she was selected for her new position.

Rebecca was one of the founding partners of OPLaw and a force to be reckoned with in and out of the courtroom. We often joked that "OP" stood for "Over Powered" and Rebecca lived up to that, building a reputation for excellence in the Vermont legal community.

Please wish Rebecca well as she moves into this new career path but continues to be "OP"!

At OPLaw, we're not just lawyers and support staff. We're also parents. As a result, the offices of OPLaw will be closed next week during February school break, so we can all spend time with our families. Your calls and emails will be answered when we return on February 28, 2022. In the event you have an emergency, you can call (802) 316-4248 and speak with Jennifer between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

It's scary right now; while we are all worried about the pandemic, many folks are worried about the future. Maybe your job won't be there when the pandemic is over, or your small business won't be able to continue. You might be worried about paying your bills or debts.

The latest federal legislation made changes to the federal bankruptcy code that might give many Americans the opportunity to wipe out long-lasting debts. If you find yourself drowning in financial red ink and want to know your options, drop OPLaw an email and arrange a free 30 minute consultation over the phone. You can reach us at [email protected]

Wash your hands, keep social distancing, and be safe!

Got spare time? Worried about your future?

COVID-19 has a lot of us thinking about what could happen next, and whether we're prepared for it. Not just whether we have enough bottled water and toilet paper, but if calamity really strikes, what will happen to us, to our finances, to our health?

OPLaw offers some reassurance - for a reasonable flat fee, we draft medical and financial powers of attorney that are ready when you need them to protect both your health and your money in case you become incapacitated. We also provide (for the same fee) an advanced care directive, putting you in charge of what medical treatments you want to authorize in case you aren't capable of telling the doctors.

For those looking past this towards planning your post mortem affairs with a last will and testament, OPLaw has you covered there too. Our firm packages a simple will with all of the documents listed above in one reasonable flat rate.

If this interests you, contact OPLaw today by emailing us at: [email protected]

Keep healthy and safe, and keep washing your hands!

COVID-19 Update:

Based on the Governor's Order, OPLaw will not be staffed at our offices in Bristol. Both of us will take files home before the stay-at-home order is in effect and will continue to work from home as best we can. However, we will not be answering our office telephones. Email will be the best way to reach us.

Keep safe, follow health guidelines, and be well.

Chris and Rebecca

COVID-19 UPDATE: Office Distancing

Dear colleagues, friends and clients:

The outbreak of novel coronavirus and its counterpart disease COVID-19 has continued to spread, and now there are positive cases in our home towns. While both of us are healthy, we have made the decision to start "Office Distancing" to slow the potential spread of the virus. This means our office will only be staffed by one of us at a time. We continue to check email regularly, and that remains the best way to contact us. We are also stopping any in-person contact with clients, potential clients, or others. We will stay in contact via email or phone call.

Our hope is that these will only be temporary measures until the end of April or mid-May, but obviously the news and circumstances are changing rapidly. We hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy and practicing social distancing. The most recent updates for Vermont can be found here:

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person-to-person, although it's not clear how easily this happens.
