I recently participated in a Conversations of Your Life panel in Montclair, where we discussed key considerations around planning for later stages of life.

The discussion focused on advanced care planning topics including how to approach health care decision-making, communicate medical preferences, and ensure your end-of-life reflects your values and wishes.

It was a terrific program with knowledgeable experts in an array of related fields and engaged attendees. I appreciated the opportunity to be part of the conversation and the thoughtful dialogue throughout, alongside Ellen Koehler, Adrian Allotey, and Rabbi Julie Roth.

Cognitive changes don’t always show up all at once - they tend to appear in patterns.

In working with older clients, some of the earliest signs can include missed appointments, changes in appearance or behavior, difficulty managing bills, or repeating the same questions and stories.

A helpful rule of thumb: if you’re noticing three or more of these changes in a short period, it may be time to take a closer look. Sudden disorganization or trouble handling routine tasks can also be important signals.

Catching these cues early can make a meaningful difference. It gives families the opportunity to step in, put the right support systems in place, and avoid situations where small issues turn into serious risks.

Elder law planning is about protecting decision-making and safety before a crisis happens, not after.

Protecting against financial exploitation doesn’t happen by accident - it takes intention and the right people in place.

For solo seniors, I often recommend starting with a few simple steps:

🔹 Identify someone you trust to step in if needed
🔹 Put a power of attorney in place and make sure it’s accepted by your financial institutions
🔹 Add a trusted contact on your accounts as an extra layer of oversight
🔹 Make sure those individuals understand their role and responsibilities

Financial mistakes and unusual activity are often the first warning signs that something isn’t right. Having a system in place helps catch issues early and prevent more serious loss.
The goal isn’t to take away independence - it’s to protect it.

When someone is aging alone, safety doesn’t come from one tool or one person - it comes from a system.

The strongest check-in plans are built with structure, not guesswork. A reliable setup should answer:
🔹 Who is responsible for checking in
🔹 What happens if a check-in is missed
🔹 Who steps in if the primary person is unavailable
🔹 How concerns get escalated quickly

One of the most common risks I see is when families assume someone else is monitoring the situation. Without clear roles, small warning signs can go unnoticed until there’s an emergency.

Putting a plan in place helps preserve independence while making sure support is always within reach.

What happens when senior care professionals bring their competitive spirit to the table?

You get the Senior Living Trivia Bowl. 🏈

It was such a pleasure hosting this high-energy trivia night alongside our own Michelle Scanlon, Member at Norris McLaughlin, P.A. bringing together senior living and care community teams to compete, connect, and network outside of the day-to-day demands of this important work.

Teams went head-to-head in a fast-paced showdown filled with great food, drinks, laughter, and a little friendly rivalry.

A big congratulations to Laurel Circle for taking home the win and earning ultimate trivia supremacy at the Senior Bowl.

Already looking forward to the next one.

When someone is aging solo, a hospital stay can move very fast - and important decisions can happen just as quickly.

In this video, we break down what a simple hospitalization plan for a solo senior should include:
📄 A one-page medication list
📄 Someone with authority to speak to doctors
📄 Support with discharge and post-discharge planning
📄 An up-to-date health care directive

A few things that often signal trouble in the hospital setting:
⚠️ Clients who can’t advocate for themselves
⚠️ Missing medical or prescription history
⚠️ Rushed, pressured discharge planning

When these issues show up together, the risk of confusion, unsafe transitions, or avoidable re-admissions increases. Planning ahead helps ensure decisions are informed, coordinated, and aligned with the individual’s wishes - not just the hospital’s timeline.
