What are your work new year's resolutions? Any favorites you implemented last year?

So far this year, mine are boring. 1 - Update my website (still working on that). 2 - Refresh my Client To Do List to be clearer about what documents I need from the past and what documents I need each time my clients receive them in the future (draft 1 completed). 3 - Archive old electronic files and shred old client paper files (with client permission, of course).

It is tax filing week, so it's time to knock out a few myths.

1 - If I don't file my tax returns, the IRS won't come after me. FALSE, the IRS will look at your 1099s and W2s and file a "Substitute for Return" and come after you for the taxes they think you owe and additional penalties for failing to file.

2 - Filing for an extension means I don't have to pay my taxes yet. FALSE, taxes are due on tax day, whether you have filed your return or not. If you requested an extension, you will still owe some fees for not paying your taxes on time, so make sure you get the returns filed as quickly as possible and get onto a payment plan with the IRS if you can't afford to pay them all at once.

3 - I can't ever get rid of my tax debt. FALSE. If you filed your tax returns promptly and accurately, you may be able to discharge some or all of those taxes after a few years. You may also be able to qualify for an OIC - offer in compromise. Talk to you favorite tax or bankruptcy professional to get more information on your options.

After a successful first year, the IRS is bringing back Direct File. What is it? You file your taxes DIRECTLY with the IRS, which includes an option to import your tax information directly from the IRS's website. For more information and to check on eligibility (for example no self-employed folks), here's the IRS's website - https://directfile.irs.gov/.
