Not so fun fact- the city permits office is not responsible for ensuring your project complies with all applicable laws and will not (allegedly) be a nuisance to neighbors. That remains the homeowner’s responsibility.

I’ve been asked by a few people the hypothetical question of if I had a client in this situation, would I pursue the city or municipality? The answer is no. I would recommend homeowners with ambitious or unique projects have a full team- engineers, project managers, GCs, and of course lawyers to support and ensure full compliance from the beginning to identify issues before they can arise.
