Florida divorce timeline, the short version.

Uncontested and straightforward: about four to six weeks.
Settles at mediation: often around month three or four.
Goes to trial: frequently 12 months or more.

Myth: "If they stop paying child support, I can keep the kids from them." Not in Florida.

Support and time-sharing are separate issues. Unpaid support does not cancel a parent's court-ordered time, and withholding that time does not cancel a support obligation. There are proper legal channels to enforce unpaid support. Withholding your child is not one of them.

Here is something a lot of parents get wrong.

In Florida, child support is not money one parent simply owes the other. It is support for the child, and the court treats it that way.

That is why parents cannot quietly agree to drop it on their own. Florida's child support guidelines set a presumptive amount, and a judge has to approve any deviation from it.

The most expensive prenuptial agreement is the one you rushed.

In Florida, a prenup generally has to be in writing and signed by both parties, and a court can decline to enforce it if it was signed under pressure or without fair financial disclosure. Vague language is where problems usually start. Clear, carefully drafted terms protect both people, which is exactly why the details matter.

Going through a Florida divorce and wondering what mandatory disclosure actually means?

In short, both sides usually have to swap key financial documents: tax returns, bank statements, pay stubs, and retirement accounts. This generally happens within about 45 days of service and ideally before mediation, so each attorney comes to the table with the full financial picture. Exceptions apply.

Think an account is "yours" just because your name is the only one on it?

Florida law may see it differently. Under Florida's equitable distribution rules, when an asset was acquired often carries more weight than whose name is on the title. Assets acquired during the marriage are generally presumed to be marital, even if only one spouse is listed. There are exceptions, and the full picture matters.

Equal time-sharing does not automatically mean zero child support in Florida.

When parents split overnights evenly, the court still runs a support calculation. It looks at each parent's income, along with the costs of health insurance and daycare, to decide whether money moves between households.

So yes, income matters. But the full financial picture matters too.
