**Your backup person shouldn't need to become a detective. 🕵️**

In many families, one person handles just about everything.

The bills. The bank accounts. The insurance. The investments. The passwords. The paperwork.

And that's fine—until that person suddenly can't.

Your estate-planning documents may name someone to step in, but does that person know where to find the information they'll need?

Having the legal authority to help and knowing *how* to help are two different things.

A little organization, a conversation with the people you've named, and a realistic backup plan can make a world of difference.

**Because your backup person should be able to step in without first having to solve a mystery.**

We talk more about this (and other reasons to revisit an existing estate plan) in our latest article:

*Is Your Estate Plan Still the Plan You Think You Have?*

Estate Planning Pop Quiz! 🧠

True or False?

If your Will says everything goes equally to your children, that's how all your assets will be distributed.

Sounds reasonable, right?

But is it true?

Drop your guess in the comments!

We'll give you a hint: Your Will isn't always the document calling the shots. 😉

“I have a Will, so my estate planning is done.”

A Will is important—but it is only one piece of an estate plan.

A good plan also asks questions like:

Who can handle financial matters if you become unable to do it yourself?

Who can make health-care decisions for you?

Do your beneficiary designations still match what you want?

How are your accounts and real estate titled?

Would a Trust be useful in your particular circumstances—or would it just add unnecessary complexity?

And if the first person you chose can't serve, who is the backup?
Estate planning isn't about collecting a standard set of documents. It's about making sure the pieces work together for your life, your property, and your wishes.

Your Will matters.

So does everything around it.

And because planning isn't only about what happens after death, our Advance Directives page explains some of the documents used for health-care and incapacity planning: https://wix.to/woWatah

They kept meaning to update their estate plan. Eventually, scheduling stopped being an issue. 💀

Skelly jokes aside, an estate plan isn't necessarily finished just because the documents were signed.

The people you chose years ago may not be the people you would choose today. A beneficiary may have died, married, divorced, become disabled, or simply become someone you would plan for differently now. Your assets may have changed. Your beneficiary designations may tell a different story than your Will or Trust. And the person named to handle things for you may no longer be willing—or able—to do it.

You don't need to revisit your estate plan every time life hiccups.
But when life changes in a meaningful way, it's worth asking whether your plan should change with it.

Skelly's estate plan may be past due. Yours doesn't have to be.

One document that especially deserves another look after major life changes is your Durable Power of Attorney. Here's why: https://www.worleyelderlaw.com/post/durable-power-of-attorney-in-florida-why-life-changes-should-trigger-a-review

October is Estate Planning Awareness Month.

Having an estate plan is important. But there’s another question worth asking:
Does the plan you have still fit the life you have now?

People change. Relationships change. Assets change. The people you once named to make decisions may no longer be the people you would choose today. And sometimes a plan that made perfect sense ten years ago simply hasn’t kept up.

This month, we’ll be sharing a few practical things to think about—not just what documents belong in an estate plan, but whether those documents, beneficiary designations, decision-makers, and backup plans still work together the way you intend.

No scare tactics. No 47-point checklist. Just a good opportunity to make sure your plan still makes sense.

If it has been a while since you looked at yours, October is as good a time as any to pull it off the shelf.

Sometimes the most important part of estate planning isn’t creating a document — it’s understanding what the documents actually do and whether they still fit your life. We’re grateful to Howard for trusting us to take a closer look, answer the questions, and help make sure the plan truly covered what mattered. 💛

Alzheimer’s changes many things, but it never changes the value of the person, the importance of their story, or the love surrounding them. 💜

On World Alzheimer’s Day, we honor those living with Alzheimer’s and the families and caregivers who support them.
