Elder financial abuse is more than just money—it’s a devastating betrayal of trust that can leave lasting emotional and financial scars.
When an older adult is taken advantage of, the impact goes far beyond their bank account. It can lead to stress, anxiety, loss of independence, and even serious health decline. Many elders feel ashamed or afraid to speak up, which allows the abuse to continue.
And the ripple effects don’t stop there. Families, caregivers, and professionals are often left trying to piece together the damage—untangling accounts, managing debt, and restoring some sense of stability. It can take months or even years to clean up the financial mess, all while trying to support the emotional recovery of someone who has been deeply hurt.
We need to talk about this more. We need to watch for warning signs. And most importantly, we need to protect and advocate for the people who once cared for us.
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and speak up. Protecting our elders is everyone’s responsibility. 💙
