Trails Outside the Box: Boulder "Flatlander" Hash House Harriers

Trails Outside the Box: Boulder "Flatlander" Hash House Harriers We love running (or walking!) unique trails around the Boulder area, singing songs, socializing, drinking, and having a great time. All ages 21+ are welcome!

The Hash House Harriers are worldwide: we like to get outside and run, walk, amble, hike or somehow on foot go through an awesome trail. Length varies; Flatlanders usually do trails of roughly 3-5 miles. Only the hares (leaders) know where we're going to start with: they plan the trail ahead of time, mark it with small dollops of flour or chalk, and the rest of us follow a few minutes later. Their

job is to lead us to the end by marking where to turn....with a few different choices, one right choice and the rest wrong. We figure it out, try (and usually fail) to catch them, and they reward us for hour efforts with a beer and water stop about half way through. (Sometimes mimosas, sometimes jello shots--you never know!). At the end, we have more "refreshment" and we sing silly, and yes often downright filthy but hilarious songs about what happened. To read more, go here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_House_Harriers

Hashing is very much what you make it, and the Boulder "Flatlanders" HHH (Flatlanders because the founders came from Tucson) particularly like to do this:

* Create really interesting trails. Not left right left through the suburbs, but places you've never been before, into ditches or past old industrial areas or over that hill into an amazing amphitheater none of us had ever seen before
* Costumes! Sometimes we have a Pirate Hash, or a red dress run (men too), or whatever the hares want. Sometimes it's just a plain hash. You never know!
* Singing! Most hashing groups sing but we really like it. Sometimes "circle", the part at the end with the drinking and the singing, takes longer than the trail. We make up verses to existing songs sometimes, or just sing a song for one person who did something awesome or silly on trail. You have to experience it. :)

Everyone is given a hashing nickname, once they've attended several hashes. These names are used instead of your regular name; you'll see the hares for the trails referred to as "G4" (Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts" or "Deep in the End" (Deep for Short) and so on. IMPORTANT NOTE: Hashing isn't for everyone and definitely not for the easily offended. It's a fantastic time on trail outside with great friends, but there is a purposefully filthy theme to the songs, there is sometimes (optional) nudity, and drinking is common though always optional. You never have to do anything you don't want to do, but be prepared for others to be enjoying themselves. It's kind of like a pressure release valve -- we're all respectable (well, mostly ;) ) programmers and lawyers and grad students and whatnot but this is a fun way to play the part of the ridiculous.
