The criminal who doesn’t report:
Failure to report child s*xual abuse is a crime

If a child is being abused now, or if you know about abuse from the past, report it to local law enforcement, the Louisiana Attorney General, the FBI, or DCFS.

Report because it protects children.

Adults who s*xually abuse children rarely stop on their own. Silence gives them time. Silence gives them access. Silence gives them another child.

If you are a mandatory reporter, your job is not to investigate, discount, explain away, or decide whether the allegation will ultimately be proven. Your duty is to report.

Counselors, teachers, principals, coaches, clergy, health care providers, child care workers, youth activity leaders, law enforcement, foster parents, CASA volunteers, probation officers, and many others are mandatory reporters under Louisiana law.

And Louisiana law has teeth. A mandatory reporter who knowingly and willfully fails to report can face criminal penalties. Failure to report child s*xual abuse can carry fines and imprisonment.

So report because it is right.

Report because it protects the next child.

Report because the law requires it.

When in doubt, report. Let trained investigators do their job. Silence is not neutral when children are at risk.
