Jeff Thomas
1970 – 2026
It is with broken hearts that we share the loss of Jeff Thomas, "The Governor."

Governor’s actually got its start right about the time Jeff did. They were both born in 1970.

But it wasn’t until his father, Gary Thomas (our founder, the original “Governor”), asked him to come to Mechanicsville and help with the business that Jeff became part of it. To say he inherited an unruly behemoth is one of the larger understatements you’ll hear around here. Nobody thought anyone could fill The Governor’s shoes.

Jeff did. And the way he transformed this place over the last decade-plus was nothing short of amazing.

In fact, no one was more surprised than Jeff to discover that this business, and this stuff, was just in his blood. He loved finding “killer” pieces and parts. If it was unusual, he loved it more. If it had a weird history, more still. (And if there was any way to turn a piece of anything into a bar, he was going to be the guy to figure it out.)

Not much came through these doors that didn’t inspire him, and he always had an idea for what it could be. After Gary passed in 2015, Jeff took Governor’s totally out of the floundering antique furniture business and went all in on salvage. Then he added building furniture right here, out of that salvage. One of a kind pieces first, custom later, and it grew to be good bit of what Governor’s did.

He loved figuring things out, and there wasn’t much he couldn’t. How to get hundreds of feet of iron fence across the country. How to “stretch” a fence, or a piece of furniture, to fit a space no one thought it could. When we collected donations for Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, he repacked that trailer again and again so we could fit more (so much more.) Then he drove it down himself.

For the past 22 months, Jeff lived with Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. But if he was at Governor’s, and he was usually at Governor's, you’d almost never have known. You’d always find him on one end of something heavy, helping a customer, on the forklift, or helping the crew make the place a little more organized.

If you were a customer, he probably loved you. Although the more heated price negotiations might have pushed him toward his father’s adage about preferring to “take it out back and smash it before giving it away.” (Perhaps the salvage dealer’s forever struggle.) One of the things he loved about what he did was meeting people and hearing your stories.

As our social media presence grew, more of you walked in already knowing who to look for: that tall guy. You could see him above most racks, and while employees joked about needing a tracker on him because he was never in one place for long, if you listened, you could always hear him. Telling someone not to pile things up because “customers can’t see it!”, making a deal, or just sharing a story with a customer.

If you talked to Jeff, yes, you probably talked salvage. But it wasn’t long before it was Hokie football, or his latest tailgate setup (The RV! The speakers!). And there was nothing more impressive than his ability to take a conversation about literally anything and turn it into one about his daughter, Sarabeth, and whatever amazing thing she was up to. That was one topic he never tired of (yes, even if that customer had just asked a price and was only there on their lunch hour.)

He didn’t do any of this alone. The amazing staff at Governor’s, past and present, were his crew, his backup, and more often than not, the other end of something heavy.

Governor’s is open, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 5.

A memorial is planned in Mechanicsville Thursday, October 29. Details to follow, and we will post here as soon as we have them.

Until then, if Jeff found you a piece, built you one, or talked you into (or out of) something, we’d truly love to hear about it in the comments.

Thank you for loving this place the way he did, and him, the way we did.
