Are you a non-profit or community organization dreaming of taking the next step in becoming tax-exempt as a 501(c)(3)? If so, you probably have a lot of questions, the application process is likely daunting, and you just don’t know where to go or what to ask.
First, 501(c)(3) status is reserved for those entities that are organized "exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, or educational purposes.” Some of these are obvious based upon what you are already doing, but some of these are not. Based upon your answer, you may still qualify for an exemption but not under section 501(c)(3). This is important because there may be other requirements under other sections like 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(6).
At Three Posts Consulting, we’ve been there and understand why the process can be hard to even know which step to take to go forward! If you are just starting out or have been working for a few years, we can help you achieve non-profit status and communicate with the IRS. Whether you need help setting up your board, finding the right structure for exempt-status, or staying in compliance, we can help.
