Oftentimes when we think of estate planning, we only think of wills, which is important. However, equally important is having current powers of attorney for both healthcare and property. This way, your wishes for both factors of your life are honored when you are no longer able to make such decisions. If you are uncertain of whether you have powers of attorney, or want to make sure that yours are current, feel free to contact us at Queen Law, and we will be happy to assist you with this and any other estate planning needs!

McLean County Government non-essential offices will be closed tomorrow

From County Administration:

Throughout the day, we have been keeping a close eye on the developing weather situation. Based on the current conditions, the weather forecast (three to four more inches of snow tonight, continued and sustained high winds, and frigid temperatures) we feel that it is with the safety of McLean County employees in mind that we close non-essential McLean County Government services for Tuesday, February 16, 2021.

We want to thank, in advance, the team at the McLean County Highway Department for the tremendous job you’ve done and will do in the early morning hours to work to clear the roads for our citizens.

And, our sincerest thanks to those employees who work in 24/7 operations.

In addition, the McLean County Law & Justice Center (aka Courthouse) will be closed and any scheduled proceedings will be rescheduled for a later date. In addition, please note:

Jurors do not need to report on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, but will need to report on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the original time they were to have reported. Litigants should check with their lawyer and the Circuit Clerk's Office for new court dates. Notices of new dates may also be mailed, so please make sure your mailing address is up to date with the Circuit Clerk's Office.

This is a great article about coping with the pandemic written by my good friend Diana Uchiyama, Executive Director of Illinois Lawyer's Assistance Program. While it is geared to lawyers, the ideas can apply to anyone!

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has issued an Executive Order suspending the requirement for an "in person" notary for the signing of wills, trusts, powers of attorneys and other documents. This will eliminate the requirement that a notary be "in person." This will make the signing of estate planning documents and real estate closings more efficient.

This is one of the most informative discussions about COVID-19 that I have seen. Well worth 20 minutes of your time!
