This week I want to give a shout out to our legal assistant and realtor extraordinaire Ellie Bliss. Ellie is very talented and versatile but particularly helps us with real estate transactions and disputes. And when she is not in our office, she practices as a real estate agent at the Bliss Family Home Team, Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. All that and taking care of her family as well!

We enjoyed having Peyton Howe join us as an intern this summer, from Illinois Wesleyan University. She did a great job and has a promising legal career ahead of her if she chooses to go in that direction.

It was a pleasure to have Katelyn Schwiderski help us as a law clerk this spring and summer. She is now a 2L at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Law and an Illinois Wesleyan University alum, and a very talented attorney in the making. Have a great semester Katelyn and thanks for all your help!

A word about the “stay at home” order. Having now read the actual text of the 9 page order, it is not nearly as restrictive to business operations as was rumored or perhaps appeared from the governor’s press conference. First, the order is appropriately protective and cautionary in terms of the general rule to stay at home except for essential businesses and activities. However, what is “essential business”? It is actually defined very broadly in 23 categories that range from the obvious, such as “sale of groceries and medicine,” to the not as obvious such as “media,” “supplies for essential business and operations,” “transportation,” “professional services” (specifically including legal, accounting, and insurance, for example). Each of the 23 categories has a description and examples of things that are included as essential. Finally, the Order encourages these “essential businesses” to remain open, but to obviously practice social distancing. We are getting a lot of calls and questions from businesses about whether they are “essential” and expect that will continue next week. Indeed, up until the written order was released, we were not sure if our law office would be allowed to remain open. Thankfully, we are, and we intend to follow the governor’s encouragement and remain open for business next week, under social distancing guidelines. I will post a link to the actual, full text executive order below and encourage everyone to read it, and feel free to reach out with any questions. We don’t have all the answers, but we are glad to help as best we can.

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction that blocks the new federal overtime rule from taking effect on Dec. 1. Here are some questions HR professionals may be grappling with in the aftermath.
