Your divorce attorney is one of the most important hires you’ll make during your divorce. But most people walk into that first consultation without knowing what to ask.

Here are four questions I always recommend asking before you sign a retainer — because how an attorney answers these tells you everything about whether they’re the right fit for your case.

And here are a few more from my full MDC Guide to Interviewing Divorce Attorneys:
→ What percentage of your practice is devoted to divorce and family law?
→ Will I be working directly with you, or will paralegals handle parts of my case?
→ What are your fees and billing structure — and can you estimate total costs?
→ Can you provide references from past clients?

One more thing I tell every client: interview at least three attorneys before signing anything. The first one who seems good might not be the best one for your specific situation.

And — your attorney is only one part of your divorce team. I always recommend bringing in a CDFA® (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst) as early as possible. A divorce-fluent financial expert can help you understand the short- and long-term implications of your settlement options in ways your attorney isn’t trained to. The right financial guidance doesn’t just protect your future — it can actually save you money on the divorce itself.

Before you take any legal steps, there are financial decisions, priorities, and timelines you need to understand. The difference between women who feel in control of their divorce and women who feel blindsided by it almost always comes down to what they did — or didn’t do — before the process began.

Before you take any legal steps, there are financial decisions, priorities, and timelines you need to understand. The difference between women who feel in control of their divorce and women who feel blindsided by it almost always comes down to what they did — or didn’t do — before the process began.

As a CDFA® and divorce strategist, these are some of the most common questions and misconceptions I hear. Save this post. Share it with a friend who needs it. And if you’re in the planning stages, your next step is a conversation — not a filing.

And if you want to learn about the step-by-step process I lead clients through in each stage of divorce (pre-filing, mediation & settlement prep & post-divorce) reach out and let’s talk. Www.DivorceConciergeFinancial.com #

Your divorce attorney is brilliant at the law. Your financial advisor knows your investment portfolio inside and out. But here’s what most women don’t realize until it’s too late: there’s a significant gap between the two, and your settlement lives in that gap.

A traditional financial advisor isn’t trained in the financial mechanics of divorce. Divorce is a specialized financial event, and general financial planning doesn’t prepare anyone for it.

On the other side, your divorce attorney is focused on the legal process and procedure, and rightfully so. But they’re not there to tell you whether taking the house over the 401(k) will leave you house-poor, or whether a lump-sum settlement beats ongoing support over time.

That’s exactly where a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst comes in. A CDFA® sits at the intersection of law and finance — specifically trained to analyze what a settlement means for your financial future, not just today, but for years to come. She’s not a luxury. She’s a critical member of your team.

I bring something even more layered to that role. As a former legislative strategist, I understand how policy, process, and negotiation intersect at the highest levels. As a licensed attorney, I read every agreement, every order, and every financial disclosure with legal precision — I don’t just advise on the numbers, I understand the legal weight behind them. As a licensed financial advisor and CDFA®, I combine the analytical rigor of financial planning with deep fluency in how divorce actually works from the inside.

My clients don’t just get financial guidance. They get someone who has lived in every room of this process.

You deserve someone who speaks both languages fluently. Reach out if you’d like to chat about your case.

Repeat after me, “Every settlement negotiation falls apart at least 3 times before you get a deal.”

If you’re heading into divorce mediation or settlement negotiations, save this. Screenshot it. Write it on your bathroom mirror. Put it on a sticky note.

Because as you prepare for and enter settlement negotiations for your divorce this is something you are going to need to come back to again and again.

A mentor gave me this piece of advice years ago when I was doing legislative strategy for the Michigan Senate, and I’ve shared it with clients entering their divorce settlement negotiations ever since.

When things feel like they’re unraveling — and they will — that moment is usually one of two things:

💡 Part of the normal process.
💡 A sign you’re close to a breakthrough.

The vast majority of divorce cases settle. Very few go to trial. But in the middle of it all — when deadlines are looming, emotions are running high, and pressure is mounting — it can feel impossible to hold your ground.

Here’s what actually gives you leverage in that room:

✔️ Know your case front to back
✔️ Know your priorities — and where you can give
✔️ Know your points of leverage
✔️ Strategy over emotion. Always.

You are the best authority on your own case. Walk in prepared and you will walk out with a better deal.

Need help preparing? Let’s talk.

What is MDC Maison? 🤍

If you’ve been part of MDC or attended one of our support groups over the years, you know the community we’ve built. MDC Maison is the next evolution of that.

Here’s what I kept seeing with my clients: the judgment gets entered, the attorney calls slow down, friends and family assume you’re fine… and that support just quietly disappears. And if you have kids and you’re suddenly sharing custody, you have a free night you didn’t anticipate — and maybe for the first time in a long time, you’re asking yourself who am I? What does this next chapter look like?

MDC Maison is the answer to that question. A post-divorce home. A sanctuary. A space to figure out what’s next — but also to just have fun, because divorce is not fun and you deserve that.

Think in-person events, real connection, confidence building inside and out. Our first event is at Joy Salon in Birmingham with Icon Anti-Aging & Aesthetics. We have a hormones + GI health event in the works. And a luxury fashion brand at Somerset will be joining us for a personal styling event this fall.

I’m so excited for this community. See you there. RSVP IN BIO🥂

MDC Maison is a space where you can show up exactly where you are — mid-divorce, newly settled, or somewhere in between — and feel like you belong.
The women in this room get it. The events are designed for it. And this community was built so you never have to figure it out alone.
If even one of those items on the list landed, we’d love to have you in the room. Join us June 10th. RSVP link in bio.

If you see me along in my car with my sunglasses on chances are I’m far away on to top of a mountain somewhere and watching the sun rise or set…. Figuratively. Do you meditate? I started before I filed for divorce in 2018, and it changed my life. Emily teaches you how to be a “self-sustaining meditator” so you can essentially do it anywhere, anytime. I always get to parenting time exchanges a few minutes early so I can get a few minutes in and be ready with clean loving energy to greet my son. And when things were more contentious it helped alleviate the anxiety before exchanges.

There’s a financial tool most women don’t know about until it’s too late in their divorce, and it could change everything about their settlement.
It’s called a lifestyle analysis. And it’s exactly what it sounds like: a detailed, itemized breakdown of what it actually costs to maintain your life from kids’ activities to household maintenance, extracurriculars, field trips, school supplies, even that extra pair of socks. The things opposing counsel will call “excessive.” The things you know are just your average Tuesday.
Here’s the problem: divorce settlements are incredibly hard to amend once they’re written. If you skimmed the numbers going in, you’re playing catch-up coming out.
This is one of the first things I walk clients through as a CDFA, because clarity before mediation is power at mediation. 🔗 Full breakdown on the blog: MichiganDivorceConcierge.com LifestyleAnalysis
