Birmingham sits at the convergence of I-20, I-59, and I-65 — three of the most active interstate corridors in the Southeast. Homeland Security Investigations has publicly described I-20 as the "most highly trafficked stretch of interstate in the entire United States." In 2022, a covert law enforcement operation called Operation Games STOP ran specifically in Birmingham and resulted in 34 commercial s*x buyer arrests, 6 human trafficking charges, 8 arrests for online enticement of minors, and the rescue of 13 minor s*x trafficking and exploitation victims along with 7 missing and endangered minors — all from a single operation in this city. The FBI Birmingham Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force remains active; as recently as June 2026, a Jefferson County case under that task force reached a guilty plea in federal court. In December 2025, Operation Relentless Justice — a two-week nationwide DOJ crackdown — resulted in 9 arrests in Alabama alone. Birmingham's position at the intersection of three major interstates means a missing teenager here has multiple directions of movement available within hours, making early identification and broad public awareness critical.
