Oscar Adams Jr. was the first African American to join the Birmingham Bar Association in 1966 and part of the first African American law firm established in the state - Adams, Baker & Clemon.

In 1980, he became the first African-American to serve on the Alabama Supreme Court.

Autherine Lucy was the first Black student to attend the University of Alabama. This was a tall task and was met with much turmoil leaving her expelled from the school shortly after attending.

Today we can give her much credit for taking the necessary steps for African Americans to attend traditional PWIs and we’re thankful for her bravery.

In 1992, Autherine Lucy received a MA in Education from the school that would not allow her to attend. Today, in her honor stands the Autherine Lucy Clock Tower on the campus of the University of Alabama to honor her efforts in pioneering desegregation.
