56 years.

Today would have been my parents’ 56th wedding anniversary.

They passed away in 2021 and 2022, just nine months apart. And after all these years, I still find myself thinking about the life they built together.

My dad was a proud Vietnam Veteran who served 27 years in the Navy. My mom was his partner through it all. She came to the United States, learned a new culture, worked full-time and raised their daughters while Dad was often away at sea.

They moved. They traveled. They started over. They raised a family. They experienced the lows, the highs, the good, the bad and the ugly. Through every decade, they chose each other and kept moving forward.

Things were not always easy. But they made it work. Four daughters, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A family. A history. A lifetime of memories.

As an adult, leaving Tahoe and coming to Los Angeles to be closer to my aging parents was one of the best decisions I ever made. The pandemic, of course, had other plans.

But those last three years with them gave me something I will always be grateful for. Spending my days with my parents at the end of their lives meant more to me than I can put into words. In many ways, I got to know them in a completely different way.

I saw their strength. Their humor. Their love. Their resilience.

When my mom passed, we decided she would join her husband and be buried at sea. Together, they went aboard an active military ship and were laid to rest in the ocean off San Diego.

There is something incredibly peaceful about knowing they are out there together, riding the waves like they did when they were here.

The ocean that carried Dad through so many years of his Navy career now holds them both.

Together again. Always.
