🏡 NC PROPERTY TAX TALK — WEEK 1

There’s a constitutional amendment on the ballot in North Carolina this November that directly involves property taxes, so over the next few weeks I’m going to break down what I’ve learned in plain English.

And before we get into it — I’m not an attorney, and I’m definitely not a politician. 😂 I’m a Realtor who works with homeowners every day, and this is the information I’ve found through my own research into the amendment.

I’m not here to tell you how to vote or which side to take. My goal is simply to help homeowners understand what we’re actually voting on.

On November 3, NC voters will be asked to vote on a:

“Constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increases by local governments.”

Sounds simple enough — but there’s an important detail.

The amendment itself doesn't set a specific percentage or dollar limit. Instead, if approved, it would require the NC General Assembly to establish limits by law on increases in the property-tax levy collected by local governments.

And a property-tax levy isn't the same thing as your home's assessed value or even your individual tax bill.

It also does not mean counties can no longer revalue property.

That distinction is where this gets interesting for homeowners.

Over the next few weeks, we're going to talk about:

📈 What happens when your home's assessed value increases
💰 What a “property-tax levy” actually is
🗳️ What changes if the amendment passes — and what stays the same

NEXT WEEK: Your house gets revalued from $300,000 to $400,000. Does that mean your property taxes automatically go up 33%?
