Federal criminal court often brings tough outcomes—it can be emotionally devastating for clients and full of uncertainty. But sometimes, there are moments of real hope and transformation.
Last week, one of my clients graduated from the Custody Alternatives Program (CAP), and it was a truly joyful day. It was a reminder that it’s never too late to change and start over.
Each of the three CAP graduates faced serious prison time and struggled for years with addiction. Despite very different backgrounds, they committed to the program, worked hard, and turned a corner. Their success not only changed their lives—it also avoided costly prison terms, saving taxpayers an estimated $1.3 million. My client is now reunited with his family, working full-time in a professional job, and living independently. He is grateful every day.
Programs like CAP show that accountability and support can go hand-in-hand—and that rehabilitation is possible.
