There are some words that hit differently when you understand what’s behind them.

Just days before her passing, Dolly Parton shared something that so many caregivers will recognize:

“I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.”

Dolly cared for her husband, Carl Dean, before his death in March 2025 after nearly 60 years of marriage. She later spoke about becoming physically and emotionally worn down during that time.

Her words are an important reminder about caregiving.

When you love someone who needs you, it is incredibly easy to put yourself last. You cancel your appointment. You ignore the symptom. You don't sleep enough. You tell yourself you'll take care of yourself when things settle down.

But caregivers need care, too.

Taking care of yourself isn't taking attention away from the person you love. It helps make it possible for you to keep showing up for them.

Schedule the appointment. Accept the help. Take the break. Tell someone when you're overwhelmed. Pay attention when your own body is telling you something isn't right.

Today, our hearts are with Dolly's family and all those who loved her. She gave the world so much joy, generosity and music—and in these final words, perhaps one more important lesson:

While you're taking care of someone you love, please don't forget to take care of you. ❤️
