At Nelson & Nelson, we are grateful for the opportunity to stand beside individuals and families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Whether helping someone rebuild after a serious injury, navigate a workplace injury, or pursue accountability after a tragedy, our work has always been about people first.

This past weekend, a few members of Team Nelson, along with some energetic children and grandchildren, participated in the 23rd Annual St. Clair County Law Day Run in support of Land of Lincoln Legal Aid. The photos may be a little chaotic, but that’s part of the fun when little ones are involved. 😊

Events like the Law Day Run are a reminder that the legal profession is about more than what happens in a courtroom or office. It’s about supporting our communities and helping ensure access to justice for those who need it most.

We are proud to support Land of Lincoln Legal Aid and the important work they do for low-income and senior residents throughout southern and central Illinois. We are also reminded that meaningful advocacy is never the work of one person alone. It takes attorneys, paralegals, receptionists, legal assistants, staff, and supportive families all working together toward the same goal — serving others with compassion, preparation, and dedication.

Our team at Nelson & Nelson recently gathered for our annual kickoff breakfast, a tradition we look forward to every year. While a winter storm pushed the event from January into March, it didn’t dampen the spirit of the morning. If anything, it gave us one more reason to come together and celebrate the people who make this firm what it is.

Not every day you resolve a $500,000 policy-limit case pre-suit—with a client who still feels grateful about her health.

That’s what happened here.

Our client was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in O’Fallon, Illinois, less than ten miles from our office. The car rolled up her leg, causing a severe degloving injury. It was a brutal, frightening crash.
Being local mattered. Within hours of the call, we were on scene, documenting the roadway, traffic patterns, nearby schools and businesses. We tracked the defendant’s citation with the local prosecutors. No hired investigator. No unnecessary costs.
We shared the facts early with the adjuster, including injury photos, and were clear from the outset: this was a policy-limit injury. Not as bluster—just reality. That allowed the carrier to evaluate the case honestly and set proper reserves from day one.

The result: a full $500,000 policy-limit settlement, pre-suit, without prolonged litigation or added stress for our client.

Even more impressive was our client herself. She handled a horrific injury with remarkable grace and repeatedly told us she felt lucky it wasn’t worse.
It’s a privilege to work for people like that.

Dr. King is rightly remembered for his leadership in the civil rights movement, but his work also extended deeply into labor advocacy and the dignity of working people. He was assassinated in Memphis while supporting striking AFSCME sanitation workers—men who were demanding safer working conditions, fair treatment, and basic respect for their labor.
In our work representing injured workers, we see every day how easy it is for essential labor to be overlooked, and how quickly people can be treated as expendable once they are hurt or unable to work. Dr. King understood that justice at work and justice in society are inseparable.

“So often we overlook the work and the significance of those who are not in professional jobs, of those who are not in the so-called big jobs. But let me say to you tonight that whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity, it has dignity and it has worth.”
