What does your will say about what you value?

Yes, a last will and testament is a legal document about who gets what and who oversees your estate, but what does it say about you and who and what you value?

Step back from thinking about a will as simply a document about things and step into in the understanding that it should communicate your legacy and how you have honored all that you value.

So, perhaps, the better question is how does my will communicate who and what I value?

Begin your estate planning journey today with a value journey. Journal each day for a week taking time to think about things like your little one playing in the park, your oldest who just finished grad school, your niece who just competed in her first track meet, your latest charitable event you attended, your finances, your last cause that made you research how things work, your journey to making your first dollar and your current retirement goals.

Now, what would your will say about you and all that you value?

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs but it does not cover all medications equally, and some drugs may carry significant out-of-pocket expenses. Specialty drugs or newer biologics can cost thousands of dollars each month, even with insurance. Consider these ways to mitigate costs:

📖Research Medicare Part D plans annually. Each year during Medicare’s Open Enrollment (October 15 – December 7), review and compare plans based on your current prescriptions. Plans differ in coverage tiers, copays, and formularies.
đź“– Look into patient assistance programs. Pharmaceutical companies and nonprofits such as the PAN Foundation have programs to help patients struggling to afford high-cost medications.
đź“– Consider a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription coverage. Some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include drug coverage with potentially lower out-of-pocket costs for certain drugs. Make sure your plan includes the specific drugs you need.
đź“– Budget for the unexpected. Retirees should factor a cushion into their budgets for uncovered or high-cost prescriptions.

Many retirees pride themselves on years of careful financial planning, yet one major area often catches them off guard: the cost of health care. Consider:
▶️Unexpected medical care expenses like prescriptions, travel for care, and concierge services can significantly impact retirement finances.
▶️ Proactive planning, including researching coverage options and budgeting for inflation, is essential to mitigate these costs.
Health care is one of the biggest expenses retirees will face, often second only to housing. According to Fidelity’s 2024 Retiree Health Care Cost Estimate, the average 65-year-old retiring today could spend $165,000 on health care during retirement.

To mitigate the risk of financial strain, consider:

➡️Understand Medicare and Supplemental Insurance. Medicare doesn’t cover long-term care services, such as custodial care in a nursing home or home care assistance. Medigap policies and Medicare Advantage plans can help cover out-of-pocket medical costs. Consider a health savings account (HSA), if eligible, as funds can be used tax-free for medical expenses in retirement.
➡️Evaluate Long-Term Care Insurance. Traditional long-term care insurance policies can help cover costs but can be expensive. Hybrid policies, which combine life insurance with long-term care benefits, may offer more flexibility. The earlier the policy is purchased, the more affordable the premiums tend to be.
➡️Incorporate Health Care Costs into Retirement Savings Goals. Work with a financial planner to estimate expected health care expenses and incorporate them into a retirement plan. Consider conservative withdrawal strategies from retirement accounts to ensure funds last through potential medical expenses.
➡️Explore Government and Community-Based Programs. Medicaid may be an option for those with limited assets, but it requires careful asset planning. Veterans may qualify through the Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits that cover long-term care services. Some states offer programs to assist with in-home care, adult day services, or respite care.
➡️Plan for In-Home and Alternative Care Options. Home modifications and assistive technology can help individuals age in place and reduce the need for costly institutional care. Adult day services and caregiver support programs can provide affordable alternatives to full-time nursing home care.

Retirement planning should include a realistic estimate of the cost of care. Failing to properly account for these costs can severely affect retirement security, leading to financial strain and potential reliance on government assistance.
