Interesting experiment.
Parents in Greystones, Ireland, came together with an unusual goal: delaying smartphones for their children for as long as possible.
What made the initiative different was that families agreed to do it collectively rather than individually. By making the commitment as a community, parents hoped no child would feel left out or pressured into getting a smartphone simply because their friends already had one.
The movement grew from shared concerns about screen time, social media, mental health, and the impact technology can have on childhood development.
Many parents said they wanted their children to spend more time outdoors, build real-world friendships, and enjoy a slower-paced childhood before becoming immersed in the digital world.
The idea has attracted attention far beyond Greystones, with other communities reportedly reaching out to learn how they might adopt a similar approach.
For many families, the initiative raises an increasingly common question:
Has childhood become too connected, too soon?
