IMPORTANT DATE FOR DIVORCED OR SEPARATED PARENTS TO KNOW -- APRIL 15TH -- In most standard possession orders issued by Texas courts the custodial parent (CP) has the right to make designations or elections. If the non-custodial parent (NCP) is going to exercise 30 days extended summer possession period then the CP can pick 1 weekend starting on Friday at 6 p.m. and ending on following Sunday at 6 p.m. On this weekend the CP can pick up the child from the NCP and return the child to the NCP at the end of the weekend. In order to take advantage of this option notice but be provided in writing to the NCP by April 15th. If the NCP did not elect a specific 30 day period then you have to assume they are going to exercise the default summer possession period of July 1st at 6 p.m. through July 31st at 6 p.m. Provide notice by APRIL 15TH to avoid being without access to your children for 30 days this summer. ADDITIONALLY, a CP can elect to take a summer weekend visitation period away from the NCP so long as the weekend does not conflict with Father's Day or NCP's extended summer possession period. Notice of this election must be provided by APRIL 15TH or with at least 2 weeks advance notice if you miss that APRIL 15TH date. The at least 2 weeks advance notice requirement does not apply to claiming a weekend visitation fduring the NCP's extended summer possession period. That needs to be elected by APRIL 15TH. IF YOU MISS THIS DEADLINE YOU MISS THAT WEEKEND WITH YOUR CHILDREN, UNLESS THE NCP OTHERWISE AGREES TO ALLOW IT.

If you fail to make a designation today you will have to utilize the default extended summer possession period of July 1st at 6:00 pm through July 31st at 6 pm.
