Did you know? The dark area beneath the cockpit of most A-10s isn’t just a design quirk — it’s a false cockpit, a clever camouflage patented in 1980 by US artist and camouflage designer Keith Ferris. From certain angles, it tricks the eye into misjudging the aircraft’s orientation.

Canada was the first to use this technique on their CF-18 Hornet — check out this inverted one! At a quick glance, it looks like the Hornet is pulling towards the ground, which during dogfights can cause enemy pilots to hesitate or misjudge the aircraft’s direction. In combat, that split-second confusion can be a game-changer.

This tactic is especially vital for the A-10 during ground attack missions, helping it evade anti-aircraft fire or enemy fighters by confusing adversaries’ perceptions. Other nations, like France and Russia, have adopted similar methods, but the US’s A-10 remains the most iconic user of this camouflage technique. A small detail with a big impact!
