I’m excited to join Oregon Justice Resource Center as its first Director of Transparency and Accountability. I’ll be using public records, litigation, and strategic partnerships to bring information about the inner workings of the criminal justice system into public view.

I remain dedicated to promoting community-focused safety and justice by addressing historic and ongoing problems with the criminal legal and punishment systems. If you want to improve outcomes, you’ve got to start with an honest assessment of the data: where we stand, what we’re doing, and what the alternatives are. My goal is to protect public access to information and shine a light on law enforcement practices – good, bad, and in between – that are happening in the name of the people.

I’m taking advantage of a tremendous opportunity to join forces with one of Oregon’s leading civil rights organizations. OJRC is a nonprofit that represents low-income and underserved people seeking access to justice to address issues with the criminal legal system.

If you are able, please consider a contribution to support OJRC’s important civil rights work.

Last week, as an alternate member of Beaverton’s Budget Committee, I offered a budget amendment that would have restored $1.4m in funding for affordable housing projects—funding that had been requested by Community Development but did not survive the internal review process. The amendment did not pass.

Affordable housing is a necessary component of a healthy community, and it is central to a comprehensive view of community safety. Without it, we increase the desperation that makes people vulnerable to crime and to criminalization. I remain committed to fighting for programs that keep our community safe and just.

Many of you had the pleasure of meeting or working with our campaign manager, Sonny, throughout the campaign. Just five days before the election, he began to learn the full scope of what has ended up being a cancer diagnosis. He has a very treatable form and is going to be ok at the end of the day, but that doesn’t make the experience less of life-changing ordeal.

The stressful and episodic career of a campaign manager, even a top-flight one like Sonny, isn’t easy. He needs some financial help. If you are able, please join me in lending support.

Within the last two weeks, our friend Sonny's life has changed with a sudden and… Jake Foster needs your support for Help Sonny Fund the Fight Against Cancer

My speech from election night. THANK you to all of Team Decker—all of YOU.

“Tens of thousands of voters have sent the message that the status quo is not okay. This race was far closer than it was four years ago.

✊Volunteers knocked on doors.
📝Advocates drafted op-eds and letters to the editor.
📬Neighbors wrote postcards to undecided voters.

They all did this because they demanded a fair, better future.

And when I say THEY, I mean YOU.

Thank you. We can still achieve that future, and I will be beside you in the effort.

The support that we’ve earned from so many corners has been staggering and humbling. And tonight, I find encouragement to move ahead, to have purpose, to move forward.

I know that we, together, reflect the values of Washington County.

And I know that we, together, will keep fighting for true justice, and real safety in the community.”

Full speech in the video, with captions.

A few minutes ago I called Kevin Barton to congratulate him and to wish him success in office.

On September 13 of last year, I officially entered the race for District Attorney. I made that leap because Washington County deserves a criminal justice system that reflects the community's values.

We end the campaign for office tonight, but no one here is halting the pursuit of justice. This campaign was never about me. It was about the issues. The reason we’re all here is to restore balance to Washington County. Despite the ballot counts, I am even surer today than I was in September that this community has the compassion, the decency, and the determination to remake our justice system.

The incumbent has held onto the office, but more than 33,000 voters sent the message that the status quo is not OK. This race was far narrower than the one four years ago, and the establishment will take note. Volunteers knocked on doors, advocates drafted op-eds, and neighbors wrote postcards to undecided voters. They did it all because they demand a fairer, better future.

Thank you.
