Elon Musk is, in real time, accessing confidential government data with no one stopping him. We did not vote for this guy, but this country put Trump in charge with his money and help, and now he has handed the keys over…and anyone trying to stand in his way is being fired.
“What we're seeing is unprecedented in that you have these actors who are not really public officials gaining access to the most sensitive data in government,” says Don Moynihan, a professor of public policy at the University of Michigan. “We really have very little eyes on what's going on. Congress has no ability to really intervene and monitor what's happening because these aren't really accountable public officials. So this feels like a hostile takeover of the machinery of governments by the richest man in the world.”

As you may know, hundreds of newly arrived Mauritanian asylum seekers are calling Ohio home while navigating the immigration court system and asylum process. Mauritania was the last country to outlaw chattel slavery (1981) and criminalize slavery (2007). However the government of Mauritania cannot or will not enforce the laws abolishing slavery, and today hundreds of thousands of Black Mauritanians are enslaved by “White Moors” in conditions that mirror slavery practiced in the American antebellum south.

Mauritanian asylum seekers in Ohio are fleeing enslavement and increasingly violent crackdowns on the Abolitionist movement by a government which maintains that slavery no longer exists. Most asylum seekers cannot afford an attorney to help them navigate their cases.

We are organizing “One Day Pro Se” assistance clinics in Cincinnati and Columbus to try to help folks get their asylum applications filed with the Immigration Court, and we need volunteer attorneys and law students.

· Volunteers will not be the attorney of record, and their client interaction will end after the clinic day
· Volunteers do not need to have experience in immigration, and can be barred in any state, and,
· I will provide training

Free asylum clinic trainings will be held every Wed. at 2:30 via Zoom from Aug. 23-Sept 13 with additional trainings on request. I hope that you will share this with your networks and firms. The more volunteers we have, the more services we can provide.
