Michigan spousal support has no formula.

Unlike child support, there is no calculation that produces a predictable number. Judges have broad discretion, and the outcome depends on the specific facts of your marriage β€” the length of the marriage, each spouse's earning capacity, contributions to the household, fault, and more.

Here is what most divorcing spouses do not know: spousal support is one of the most negotiable aspects of a Michigan divorce. Understanding what a court would realistically award is the foundation for any productive negotiation.

We just published a full guide on how Michigan courts decide spousal support and what to know before you agree to anything.

Unlike child support, Michigan spousal support has no formula. Judges have broad discretion, and the outcome depends entirely on the facts of your marriage. Learn what courts actually consider and what to know before you negotiate.

Your child says they want to live with you. Does that control the outcome of a Michigan custody case?

No. But it matters.

A child’s preference is one factor among twelve under Michigan’s best interest test. There is no magic age at which it becomes decisive. And the reasons behind the preference carry as much weight as the preference itself.

Here is what most parents do not know: how you handle your child’s preference is itself evaluated by the court. Coaching your child is one of the most damaging things you can do in a custody case.

A child's preference is one factor among twelve in Michigan custody cases β€” not a deciding vote. There is no magic age, and the reasons behind the preference matter as much as the preference itself. Here's what parents need to know.

School starts in about four weeks.

If your parenting time schedule does not fit the upcoming school year, the window to fix it is closing.

An agreed modification can sometimes be in place before the first day of school β€” if you act now. A contested one filed today almost certainly cannot.

Either way, waiting is the worst option.

School starts in weeks and your parenting time schedule no longer fits. An agreed modification can move quickly β€” a contested one almost certainly cannot. Here's what to do right now.

If someone told you the Friend of the Court schedule is all you are entitled to for parenting time in Michigan, that is not necessarily accurate.
The FOC schedule is a baseline. Not a ceiling.
Michigan courts consider ten statutory factors in determining what is reasonable for a specific child and family. And the schedule you agree to early in the case β€” even temporarily β€” can be harder to change than most parents expect.

Michigan's standard parenting time schedule is a baseline β€” not a ceiling. Learn what courts actually consider in determining reasonable parenting time and what to do when the other parent denies it.

For years, a Michigan OWI stayed on your record forever. That is no longer true.
Since 2022, a single first-offense OWI can be expunged after a five-year waiting period. It is not automatic. The judge still has discretion, and the requirements are specific.
But for a lot of people carrying an old OWI, this is the first real chance in years to clear it.
We just published a full guide on who qualifies and how the process works.

Legal custody and physical custody mean different things in Michigan β€” and most parents encounter these terms for the first time in the middle of a case, when the pressure to make decisions is already high.
Legal custody: who makes major decisions about the child's life.
Physical custody: where the child lives.
These are two separate questions. The outcome on one does not automatically determine the outcome on the other.
And the arrangement you agree to at the beginning of the case β€” even temporarily β€” can be harder to change than most parents expect.

Legal custody and physical custody mean different things in Michigan β€” and confusing them can lead to agreements that don't reflect what you actually want. Learn how each type works and how courts decide when parents cannot agree.

Michigan does not call it a DUI. The charge is OWI β€” and it covers more ground than most people expect.
The .08 BAC threshold is just one of four ways to be charged. A BAC of .17 or higher triggers a separate, enhanced charge with its own penalties. And visible impairment alone β€” even below .08 β€” is enough.
Here is the part that matters most: OWI cases are not won or lost at trial. They are won or lost in the weeks immediately following the arrest.
We just published a full guide on what Michigan's OWI statute actually says and what to do if you have been charged.

Michigan does not use the term DUI β€” the charge is OWI, and it covers more ground than most people expect. Learn what the statute actually says, what the different charges are, and why early decisions matter most.

If police show up at your door and ask to come in β€” you can say no.
Most people do not know that. And police are not required to tell you.
Consent is the most common exception to the warrant requirement. If you say yes, it is waived. If you say no, calmly and clearly, your Fourth Amendment rights stay intact.
The exceptions to the warrant requirement are broader than most people realize. We just published a full guide on what they are and exactly what to do when law enforcement shows up at your door.

Police generally need a warrant to enter your home β€” but the exceptions are broader than most people realize. Learn when they can enter without one, how to refuse consent, and what to do if they enter unlawfully.

Thinking about getting a Michigan divorce without a lawyer to save money?
It is worth knowing this first: the mistakes made in pro se divorces often cost more to fix than an attorney would have cost upfront.
Vague judgment language. Retirement accounts that never get properly divided. A mortgage that stays in both names. These are predictable mistakes β€” which means they are avoidable if you know what to watch for.
We just published an honest guide on when self-representation is realistic and when it is not β€” including a middle-ground option most people do not know exists.

You can get a divorce in Michigan without a lawyer β€” but the mistakes made in pro se cases often cost more to fix than an attorney would have cost upfront. Here's an honest look at when it works and when it doesn't.

Michigan does not split everything 50/50 in a divorce.
Before the court divides anything, it has to answer one question most people do not think to ask: what actually counts as marital property?
Assets owned before the marriage are generally protected. So are inheritances and gifts. But commingling β€” mixing separate property with marital funds β€” can cost you that protection without you realizing it.
Retirement accounts, business interests, and debt add another layer of complexity most people do not see coming.
We just published a full guide on how Michigan defines marital property and how courts divide it.
