As last year’s past president of the East Ascension Rotary Club, the Covid pandemic, threw many curve balls at me. Apparently, Covid is still on the mound, but the East Ascension Rotary is determined that it will not let it strike us out.
Traditionally, the East Ascension Rotary Mardi Gras Ball is not only the premiere event of the year in Ascension Parish, but it is also our biggest fundraiser where our rotary donates proceeds (usually around $12K-$17k) to a cause or beneficiary chosen by the former year’s president who presides as King or Queen of the ball. That would have been me.☹️
I could honestly care less about the “king” for a night thing, but when Mardi Gras events began to be cancelled around the stage, it was kind of upsetting because it meant that the fundraising portion would not happen. When I discussing the cancelling the ball with the leadership, my chosen cause was Su***de Prevention/Awareness, especially amongst our youth. The extraordinary group that make up the club, insisted that while Covid may cancel Mardi Gras and limit the physical size of an event, the Covid pandemic also made the hosting of this event a necessity, as mental illness/su***de has risen drastically with Covid. Our wonderful committee is putting together a down-sized Spring event in March. A smaller size-event, however, means less funds raised at the event, but luckily for us, we are led by some very determined leaders (Lisa Faucheux Bacala Bridget Morris Hanna Donna Whittington Michael Buturla). A Go-Fund me account has been set up. So, PLEASE, if you find yourself with some change that you are willing to donate, please consider this cause!
