A group of PD10 attorneys and staff joined public defenders' offices from across Florida at the annual FPDA Summer Conference last month. This year’s programming focused on mental health, with sessions designed to strengthen the skills and knowledge we bring to our work every day. We were especially proud to have our First Assistant Public Defender, Jayde Coleman Stephens, present on competency issues, evaluations, and litigation. We’re always excited to learn alongside our colleagues and bring new knowledge back to our office and the clients we serve.

Earlier this month, we welcomed another group of justice-minded high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates for an inside look at advocacy and the criminal justice system. Throughout the week, students observed court proceedings, toured local justice system facilities, and participated in hands-on learning experiences, including a CSI presentation.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this session of the Justice & Advocacy Academy a success. We hope this experience inspired the next generation of advocates, leaders, and public servants.

Meet Our Summer Intern Tommy Turkett!
Tommy is a rising 3L at LSU Law Center and is excited to be returning to Polk County for the summer. His experience at LSU includes serving as a federal judicial extern for the Middle District of Louisiana and publishing an article on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines as a Junior Associate on the Louisiana Law Review. Tommy looks forward to applying what he's learned to public defense while gaining valuable courtroom experience. We are glad to have you us this summer, Tommy!

Meet Our Summer Intern Laura J. Hutton!
Laura is a rising 3L at Stetson University College of Law who brings a unique background to public defense, including five years as a high school English teacher and more than a decade as a litigation paralegal. After completing a criminal clinical externship with the Sixth Circuit Public Defender's Office last fall, she's excited to continue building her courtroom experience with us this summer. We're happy to have you with us, Laura!

Glennal is a rising 3L at Stetson University College of Law and is also returning for her second summer with our office. A graduate of UCF with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations, she hopes to use her legal education to advocate for others, particularly children, as a public defender. We're excited to welcome Glennal back for another summer with our team!

Meet Our Summer Intern Gabriella Tedesco!
Gabriella is a rising 3L at Stetson University College of Law and a familiar face around our office. After interning with us last summer and completing a criminal law externship with our office this spring, she's returning for another summer of learning. As founder and president of the Stetson Criminal Law Society, Gabriella is committed to a career in criminal law and hopes to become a public defender after graduation. We're glad to have you back, Gabby!
