Cook County property taxes just hit a record $19.9 billion. 📈

Homeowners from Chicago to Palatine are covering most of the increase. 🙁

Of the $743.8 million in new taxes requested, residential owners will pay $593.4 million — about 80%.

This marks 32 consecutive years of annual increases.

641 of 740 local districts raised taxes.
And with rising commercial vacancies throughout the Chicagoland area, more of the tax burden continues shifting onto residential properties.

Treasurer Maria Pappas put it plainly:
“If you have 80% of the people sitting at home… and don’t vote, this is what you’re going to get.”

Cooler evenings have arrived, and fireplaces across Palatine and Northwest Suburbs are beginning to glow again. Before you light that first fire 🔥 of the season, take a few moments to ensure your home is ready for a safe and comfortable winter.

🚨 A few simple steps can make a big difference:
• Schedule a professional chimney inspection and cleaning once a year.
• Use a sturdy screen or glass cover to protect children and to prevent sparks and embers.
• Keep furniture, rugs, and decorations at least three feet away from the fire.
• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and always make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the room or going to bed.
