Three Black families in Baltimore County represented by Lauren DiMartino and Andy Freeman have filed a federal lawsuit challenging a years-long pattern of discriminatory harassment and selective enforcement by the Queen Anne Village Association in Owings Mills, Maryland, and others against Black families who use housing vouchers to rent home. The tenants and their children were repeatedly followed, recorded, confronted, subjected to disproportionate fines, and reported to police while engaging in ordinary activities in and around their homes and community common areas – all taking a profound toll on the families’ sense of safety and belonging in their own community and ultimately leading one of the three plaintiff tenants to move out. Managing Partner Jessie Weber was recently interviewed by Straight Arrow News about a lawsuit challenging the exclusion of a blind woman from jury service in New York. Jessie, along with BGL attorneys Michelle Fraling and Eve Hill, represents Emeline Lakrout, a Paralympic gold medalist who was summoned for jury service but ultimately dismissed after the court and attorneys raised concerns about whether her blindness could be accommodated. Rather than exploring assistive technology that would afford Ms. Lakrout an equal opportunity to participate, the court excused her from service.
