October 17th marks the first day of National Estate Planning Awareness Week which continues until October 23rd. In 2008, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC) worked with Congressional leaders to pass H. Res. 1499, designating the third week of October as National Estate Planning Awareness Week. The purpose of this annual event is to educate the public about the benefits of having an estate plan in the event of disability or death. Only 33% of Americans currently have an estate plan. Surprisingly we read about celebrities who die without Wills and the battle over their estates is played out in the public arena. No matter the size of your estate, it is important to have at least a Will, financial power of attorney, and medical directive. The plan for each person is different depending on their needs.
