PBRC’s Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) is expanding and for multiple positions!

As part of the Rural Access to Immigrant Legal Services (RAILS) initiative, PBRC will now be offering immigration legal services in Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We are looking to build out a team to launch and deliver these services, including hiring for the following roles:

✅ Community Outreach Coordinator
✅ Paralegal
✅ Staff Attorney

The Partners for Justice Conference takes place annually, and presents a unique opportunity for legal services program staff, the public and private bar, members of the judiciary, and other advocates to address how we can collectively improve access to justice.

This is your opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas while leading discussions on key issues. Are you spearheading a cutting-edge program? August is Make-A-Will Month!

A will is a legal document that directs your property to be distributed as you see fit. Without a will, the state decides how to distribute your assets, which may not reflect your wishes.

PBRC’s Home Preservation Project (HPP) hosts free, in-person estate planning clinics at which lawyers meet one-on-one with eligible Baltimore homeowners to prepare free wills, financial powers of attorney, and advance medical directives.

HPP will be hosting the following estate planning clinics throughout the fall:

Pro bono volunteers needed for PBRC's Consumer Protection clinics in Baltimore City and Prince George's County!

Each year, tens of thousands of Marylanders face lawsuits over debts, often based solely on a sworn statement by creditors or debt purchasers. Many of PBRC’s Consumer Protection Project (CPP) clients are overwhelmed by personal hardships, such as job loss, medical bills, or housing instability. Often, they are unaware of the validity of the debt, which may have been bought and sold multiple times before reaching court.

Join our team of dedicated volunteer lawyers, law students, and paralegals to counsel clients, negotiate with creditors to reduce or resolve debts, and help prevent devastating consequences like wage garnishment. PBRC will prepare you to effectively interview and advise clients and defend, settle, and negotiate common types of debt collection cases in Maryland district court.

Congratulations to PBRC's Executive Director Sharon E. Goldsmith for being recognized by The Daily Record as an MD500 Leader!

The MD500 is The Daily Record’s recognition program celebrating the most accomplished professionals throughout Maryland. Their editorial team carefully selects 500 individuals who are driving innovation, creating jobs, building communities, and making Maryland a better place to live and work.

Sharon was recognized for being a founding force in Maryland’s access-to-justice movement. Under her leadership, PBRC mission and impact have grown as we continue to mobilize volunteer lawyers to provide free legal services to marginalized communities statewide. Sharon also oversaw the expansion of PBRC's work into direct services in areas of critical legal need, including eviction & foreclosure prevention, consumer protection, home preservation, and immigration.

PBRC's Academy is a one-year, service-learning program for Maryland attorneys. Fellows who join will:

✅ Gain training and practical mentorship to enhance the Fellows’ lawyering skills,

✅ Build skills in fact-gathering, negotiation, in-court representation, counseling, and document drafting,

✅ Build an intentional pro bono plan and gain experience offering free legal services in court and at community clinics, and

✅ Have access to free networking events where Fellows will be introduced to like-minded colleagues with whom they will make lasting connections.

Last week, PBRC team members attended the MIE National Conference for Legal Aid Fundraising & Communications! The conference was centered around the theme of Forward Together: Uniting Supporters for Lasting Change.

Becca Odelius, PBRC's Volunteer Manager, presented on a panel titled "Volunteer Engagement in Legal Services: Grow What Your Know." She was able to share how PBRC has witnessed the evolution of volunteer engagement in Maryland throughout over 36 years of service, and how our organization has adapted to these shifting trends.

We feel energized from the opportunity to learn from and share our knowledge with other thought leaders in legal aid from across the country – we're excited to move justice forward together!
