Testimony on S.B. 0956 | Guardrails for penalties and late fees on EZPass Bills

Our boy Brett Wilson looks pretty good testifying in front of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee yesterday. Hopefully the Maryland Legislature will pass this, potentially saving Maryland Residents millions in ballooning payments from EZPass Penalties.

So cool to have one of our one be a small piece in the conversation to make Maryland a little better than how we found it.

Our very own Dir. of Business Relations, Brett Wilson seen here testifying last week on HB 1283. A bill to limit civil penalties and fees on EZ Pass Tolls so that they do not financially strain Maryland Residents.

Conveniently enough, Brett also experienced the very same problem two years ago when he was hit with $30,000 in civil penalties from EZ Pass. A bill that would have originally been $900.

Great job Brett! It's always nice to see a story come full circle!

Introducing Our Firm | Meet Brett

Brett Wilson is our Director of Business Relations. Like our entire firm, Brett has a unique background, that allows him to connect with our clients in a deep and personal way.

Originally growing up in Bel Air, MD, Brett considers himself from "an average middle class" family.

"Everything got difficult during the mortgage crisis in 2008...we lost our house, my parents divorced, and it put a lot of strain on our family...even when I got to college I was always waiting for the 'other shoe' to drop...I bounced around with different jobs trying to find the perfect place".

Brett originally started work, when he dropped out of college in his junior year, at Wells Fargo as a mortgage banker. Later he would continue as mortgage banker at PrimeLending, A PlainsCapital Company. "I was a terrible salesperson...it just was not where I wanted to be". Eventually, Brett would wind up driving commercial trucks for Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay, and Breakthru Beverage.

"I loved being a truck driver. It was extremely freeing being on the open road...it was an honest day's work where you could hang your hat up and be done...but being on the road for long stretches of time by yourself, away from your family and loved ones; it got me wondering: 'can I do more'? I had coached lacrosse for several rec, high school, and club programs; and I wanted that feeling of serving others in a really impactful way".

That idea would come fruition when Brett was eventually hit with $30,000 in fines and civil penalties from Maryland EZ Pass system. "It was heart breaking. I couldn't get to work or school. I still had car payments, and couldn't sell my car to pay off the debt even if I wanted to...it felt like I was getting beat by the system...I think that motivated me to go to law school...I wanted to be the voice and champion in these moments when people feel like they are upside down and have no other place to go".

In 2023 Brett would get into the Fannie Angelos Scholars Program at The University of Baltimore--a program with mentorship towards getting into UB's Law School.

Today, Brett has been accepted into several different law school programs, and serves the firm in many way to drive relationships with business partners, clients, and government officials and agencies alike. Brett recently testified in Annapolis on HB 1283 on a bill that would put in guard rails to prevent EZ Pass bills from skyrocketing on Maryland Residents.

"Like so many I have a crazy story full of twists, turns, successes, and failures...but if there is one thing that gives me strength is knowing that we can all dust ourselves off and keep moving forward. God has a plan"

Brett continues to reside in Bel Air, MD with his fiancé and step son. He attends St. Ignatius Church in Hickory, MD, and enjoys coaching lacrosse, playing outdoors, and spending time with the ones he loves most. He is a true advocate for other people, and looks to see the best in each and every person. He is wonderful addition to the firm and we hope to have him for many years! Thank you Brett for all that you do!

Introducing Members of Our Firm | Meet Kiva

Our firm's Intake Specialist. A Harford County resident from Fallston.

Kiva's story starts when her parents adopted her from Santiago, Chile. "my mom had cancer, and could not have a child of her own, so they adopted...I never saw it as a bad thing because my birth mom gave me up to have a better life, and for that I am so thankful for her sacrifice".

Kiva described her childhood as imaginative, always climbing trees or getting into games of make believe. The inner child is something she still holds near and dear to her heart. "I just think if you can't have bewilderment and joy to life, it's not worth living".

That bewilderment and joy would lead to things like working at Maryland Renaissance Festival, where she and our firm's owner, Brittany, would become close friends.

Kiva would eventually enroll at Harford Technical High School to get into Welding. "I just love being gritty, and dirty with my work...I loved the beauty in the work and its usefulness...I enjoyed making something that I knew people would use"

"I was working for Bloom Energy in Delaware, and I got moved from fabrication to the diagnostic shop, where I was doing more maintenance and less welding...it made me pretty miserable...I felt like I lost my passion...and I posted about it one Facebook...that's where Brittany saw my post and wanted to hire me".

Since then Kiva does it all, she handles client intake, communications with clients, filing court proceedings, and so much more.

"I love to be the oddball office mom...I love checking in and seeing how everyone is doing around the office...I love bringing in snacks and providing for the people I care about, sometimes just wondering how everyone's feeling...I like to think I'm responsible for the office morale".

And she would not be wrong. Anyone who gets the chance to call the office, will most likely be greeted by a joyful voice, and get to hear the care and concern she brings to all things.

In her spare time, Kiva has her own arts and crafts that she makes and sells at the Renaissance Fair and online. She has a kind child-like heart, and always wishes to be there for other people.

Thank you Kiva for all that you do!

Introducing Members of our Firm | Meet Jake

Our Workers' Compensation Paralegal.

Not originally from the Baltimore area, Jake hails from Council, Idaho. A population of less than a thousand people, and as he describes "everyone knew everything about everyone...it definitely was a place where if someone needed help rebuilding their house, or a family member unexpectedly passed away...the whole town would come out in support".

"It was great growing up there...I grew up with three brothers and three sisters, and a lot of cousins...my mom had five siblings". Jake described going to his Uncle's ranch every summer helping out with their horses and various chores.

However, living in a small town can be tough. Jake said "you either grew up becoming a rancher, a logger, or working at the mill". After graduating high school, Jake joined the Coast Guard, where he still has his year book from 1995, where he and his crew ventured to Antarctica.

Jake would leave the service after four years and move to Seattle, where he would meet his wife Anja. The two would eventually move back to Harford County, where Anja's parents reside.

For 20 years Jake spent his time in the restaurant industry as a General Manager, and would eventually meet and hire the firm's owner, Brittany, while she was going to school.

When asked why Jake left to come work for the firm, he stated "life for families is tough in the restaurant industry, and I wanted something where I could be home every night...when Brittany told me about the role, I didn't have a background in Workers' Compensation or in the Legal Profession".

Perhaps its due to his care of people, his sense of service, or the values of being raised in a small town, but as Brittany describes "Jake rocks it".

Jake is a person who cares about each one of the lives he touches. "It's funny because I rediscovered a passion fighting for the little guy...it was the same sense of community back home...I always loved the satisfaction of seeing people having a good time when I worked in restaurants, but now I get to combine all of the moments in my life to bring that same satisfaction to people who really need it"

Oftentimes it can feel like an uphill battle trying to help get our clients the medical treatments or determinations they need to move along with their lives, but Jake does it anyway.

He is a person of intense empathy and moral fiber. Anyone of our clients that meets him will know that this man has your back and cares deeply about each and every person. He is willing to work the long hours, inch by inch, to get our people the resolution they deserve.

He and Anja still reside in Harford County, and in their spare time like to volunteer at Maryland 5 Star in Cecil County--a horse competition in October featuring dressage, cross country, and jump competitions. Thank you Jake for all that you do.

Whitby LLC on Tour | Harford Technical High School

Last month, our firm started a new initiative. As a firm we want to help educate high school students of the Maryland area, and help them understand their legal rights--especially those who will soon be entering the workforce, or learning to drive.

We had a fantastic time with members of the Senior Class of Harford Technical High School! We also wish to thank the administration for allowing us time to give back to the community.

It is our hope that doing so will help create young people who are better equipped to handle these stressful situations should something happen their lives.
