Today I saw my client for the first time as a free man.

After spending more than a decade behind bars for a crime he did not commit, he was exonerated and released.

For the last two years, we fought tirelessly to challenge his conviction through a post-conviction petition - and we won! His conviction has been overturned, and today he is finally home with his family.

There is no greater feeling than standing beside someone in the fight for justice - and no greater reward than seeing that fight bring them back to freedom.

This is why we do the work.

Don’t forget, when asked if you’ve been naughty or nice this year, always ask for your attorney and remember you have the right to remain silent!

Last week I had the opportunity to argue in front of the newly renamed Appellate Court of Maryland. I argued that in a criminal case, asking a compound voir dire question regarding a potential juror's strong feelings regarding the crimes charged is a reversible error. I further argued that although the trial counsel failed to object and preserve the argument for appeal, the Appellate Court should utilize it's discretion to find a plain error and overturn my client's conviction.

Watch the argument here.

Great news from home!

Today I received an email from the Court notifying me that the Petition for Post Conviction Relief that I argued on behalf of my client was granted! The court found that my client’s original attorney was ineffective for failing to convey a more favorable plea offer resulting in prejudice to his case. As a result of the Court’s ruling, my client will now have the benefit of a new sentencing hearing which will hopefully ensure his immediate release!

As you may know, over fifteen years ago, I joined the United States Navy Reserves. Typically, this is only a part-time commitment but occasionally I am called upon to serve in a full time capacity.

Two weeks from today, I will be leaving for a year long overseas deployment with the US Navy. During this time, I will not be taking on any new cases. All existing clients have been previously notified of my departure and my remaining open cases will be handled by substitute counsel during my absence.

I would like to take this time to thank my clients for their trust and patience, my colleagues for their continued support and my family for sacrificing so much so that I can serve our country.

I look forward to taking on new cases again upon my return in 2022, and will still be available via email while I'm away.

Thank you again for your understanding and please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Today the Court of Special Appeals, in a reported opinion, overturned my client's charges of participation in a criminal gang and vacated his sentence. Based on my appellate arguments, the Court found that the trial court erred by introducing irrelevant evidence against my client. The ruling clarifies the current Maryland statute regarding participation in a criminal gang and what the State must establish in order to prove guilt. If you or someone you know have been charged or convicted with participation in a criminal gang and you have questions on how this ruling may effect the case, feel free to contact the Law Office Of M Lloyd Patton.

Last week I had the opportunity to argue to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals that my client did not receive a fair trial and that his conviction must be reversed. Specifically, I argued that the trial court abused its discretion by allowing the State to introduce inadmissible, irrelevant and prejudicial evidence against my client. That evidence was so inflammatory that denied him a fair trial. If you or someone you know has been wrongfully convicted due to judicial or attorney error, call me today for a free consultation.

Watch live as I make oral argument in front of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. My case involves the government seizure of money from my client five years ago. The Maryland General Assembly changed the forfeiture law back in 2016 making it more difficult for State and County officials to take and keep a citizen's property. The change in the law was the result of increased scrutiny of civil forfeitures based off reports that individuals were facing a loss of their property without ever being charged with a crime. These same individuals were then forced to fight to keep their property in a system that was stacked against them. Today I argue that the new law must be applied to my client's case and his property must be returned immediately. If you or someone you know has been unfairly impacted by a government seizure of property, contact me for a free consultation.

Back in action!!

After almost six months without being physically inside a courtroom due to court closings, Covid-19 and military duty with the US Navy Reserves, I was back at it today. After a quick trial, my client was acquitted on all charges after months of being wrongfully accused! Happy to be back in the courtroom and happy for my client to have this huge weight off their shoulders!

Today I was reminded why I do what I do....

A few years ago a family came to me looking for help to get their son out of jail. Last year we won his post-conviction after convincing the Court that his original attorney was ineffective. Today, the Court ruled to release him from incarceration and send him home to his family. It was a long and hard fought battle but proves that if you work hard enough justice is possible.

It is a great day when you are able to help someone get a second chance at life.
