A tremendous victory today in the Appellate Court of Maryland!

The video below shows oral argument in a case that resulted in an important decision protecting Maryland citizens' constitutional rights.

Our client had been convicted of unlawful possession of a fi***rm and was serving his sentence. On appeal, we argued that law enforcement officers stopped him based solely on their belief that he might be carrying a fi***rm. Following the Supreme Court's decision in Bruen, the mere possibility that someone is lawfully carrying a fi***rm is not enough to create reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. The Fourth Amendment requires more.

The Appellate Court of Maryland agreed, holding that the officers lacked reasonable suspicion to stop our client and that he was seized in violation of his Fourth Amendment rights. As a result, the conviction cannot stand, and the Circuit Court for Baltimore City has since dismissed his case.

This decision represents an important development in Maryland law following Bruen. It reinforces that constitutional protections apply to everyone and that courts will continue to hold the government to the standards required by the Constitution.

I'm incredibly proud to have obtained this result for our client and grateful for the opportunity to advocate for the protection of individual liberties. Victories like this remind us why appellate advocacy matters, not only for one client, but for the development of the law and the protection of everyone's constitutional rights.

For nearly a decade I had the privilege of working for a man who didn’t just teach me how to be a better lawyer - he helped shape the way I approach justice, integrity and public service.

He was more than my boss. He was a mentor and a friend. As a young trial attorney, I learn so much by watching the way he handled the courtroom, treated people with respect, and never lost sight of the responsibility that comes with serving the public and upholding the Constitution.

Over the last few years, I’ve been proud to watch him lead and work to make Baltimore City better. His commitment to the community and to doing the job the right way has never changed.

I’m grateful for everything he taught me, proud to call him a friend, and excited to support him as he continues the work ahead. Looking forward to seeing what the next four years bring.

Today I saw my client for the first time as a free man.

After spending more than a decade behind bars for a crime he did not commit, he was exonerated and released.

For the last two years, we fought tirelessly to challenge his conviction through a post-conviction petition - and we won! His conviction has been overturned, and today he is finally home with his family.

There is no greater feeling than standing beside someone in the fight for justice - and no greater reward than seeing that fight bring them back to freedom.

This is why we do the work.

Last week I had the opportunity to argue in front of the newly renamed Appellate Court of Maryland. I argued that in a criminal case, asking a compound voir dire question regarding a potential juror's strong feelings regarding the crimes charged is a reversible error. I further argued that although the trial counsel failed to object and preserve the argument for appeal, the Appellate Court should utilize it's discretion to find a plain error and overturn my client's conviction.
