One of the best parts of being a home inspector is that my work takes me to places I probably never would have visited otherwise. Today it was the work truck instead of Arkansas Belle, but the adventure was just as worthwhile. Every inspection gives me a chance to discover another piece of Arkansas’s history.

🏡 Home Inspection Tip:
Water has shaped Batesville for more than 200 years, and it’s one of the biggest factors affecting homes too. Proper grading, functional gutters, downspout extensions, and good drainage around the foundation can help prevent costly moisture problems.

🤖 Kevin’s Curio Collection
Kevin decided today’s keepsake is a tiny “river stone,” a reminder that strong foundations—whether they’re supporting a historic town or a family home—are built to last.

Can you spot Kevin hiding in today’s photos?

Exploring Arkansas with Kevin & Arkansas Belle

📍 Des Arc, Arkansas

Before today’s home inspection, I had a little time to explore one of Arkansas’s oldest river towns.

Des Arc sits along the White River and has been welcoming travelers for nearly two centuries. Walking through the museum, seeing the old schoolhouse artifacts, early river history, and the preserved log cabin is a reminder of how much craftsmanship—and hard work—went into building communities long before modern tools existed.

Then came the unexpected part…

While visiting the state park office, I caught the faint smell of natural gas. Curiosity got the better of me, so I grabbed my combustible gas detector from the truck. Sure enough, it indicated a leak. I let the staff know, and they contacted the city to investigate.

Just another reminder that once you’re a home inspector, you’re never really “off duty.”

Every town I visit has its own story. Today it was Des Arc’s history—and hopefully helping prevent a future problem.

🏠 Inspection Tip

Natural gas doesn’t always announce itself loudly. If you notice even a faint odor around your home, don’t ignore it. Leave the area if necessary, notify the gas utility or emergency services, and have the issue evaluated before returning.

Thank you, Des Arc, for another great stop on my Arkansas journey.

Exploring Arkansas with Kevin & Arkansas Belle 🏍️
📍Jacksonport, Arkansas

Today, Arkansas Belle and I made our way to one of Arkansas’ most fascinating historic towns—Jacksonport.

Nestled along the banks of the White River, Jacksonport was once one of the busiest river ports in the state. Long before highways and interstates, steamboats carried people, supplies, and opportunity through this community, helping shape Arkansas’ early growth.

Walking the historic courthouse grounds, I was reminded how much craftsmanship has stood the test of time. The brickwork, stone foundation, and architectural details have endured for generations thanks to quality construction and ongoing maintenance.

One stop that really caught my attention was the Civil War monument and historic cannon. Regardless of how history is viewed today, these monuments remind us that understanding our past helps us better understand where we are today.

📍Kevin’s Curio Collection #2
Did you know the nearby community of Oil Trough got its name from early settlers who rendered bear fat and stored it in troughs carved from hollow tree trunks? It’s one of those uniquely Arkansas stories that makes exploring our state so much fun.

🔍 Inspector’s Eye
Historic buildings teach us an important lesson: water is the enemy of every structure. Even after more than a century, proper drainage, functioning gutters, and keeping water away from foundations remain some of the best investments any property owner can make.

🐾 Kevin was somewhere around the courthouse today… did you find him?

❓Question of the Day:
Have you ever visited Jacksonport State Park or explored this historic river town? I’d love to hear your favorite memories or hidden gems in the comments!

As always, thank you for following along as we explore the Natural State—one town, one story, and one inspection at a time.

Heber Springs, Arkansas

Today Arkansas Belle and I traded the office for the backroads and spent some time exploring beautiful Heber Springs.

I wasn’t able to track down the Welcome sign this trip (I’ll be back!), but I did stop by the visitor center, took in the view of the Little Red River, and admired one of Arkansas’s most recognizable landmarks—Sugarloaf Mountain.

As a home inspector, I get the opportunity to visit communities all over our state. Every town has its own history, scenery, and character, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about this job.

💡 Home Tip of the Day:
Living near a river or lake is beautiful, but moisture is a home’s biggest enemy. Whether it’s a crawlspace, attic, or basement, excess moisture can lead to wood deterioration, mold growth, and indoor air quality concerns if it isn’t properly managed.

If you’re buying a home in the Heber Springs area—or anywhere in Central Arkansas—I’d be honored to help you understand the condition of your investment before closing.

🍳 Brunch in Searcy Just Got a Whole Lot More Fun! 🥂

Kim and I stopped by Rock House in Searcy to check out their new brunch menu, and we were impressed!

The food was creative, the drinks were unique, and everything was presented with a lot of personality. From the loaded Bloody Mary topped with bacon, shrimp, olives, and pickled okra to the avocado toast and breakfast skillet, and let’s not forget about the in your dreams drink with a lavender sprig for garnish, there was plenty to enjoy. The deviled egg flight was a fun twist, and the lavender hibiscus drink was as pretty as it was refreshing.

One thing we appreciated was that brunch didn’t feel like an afterthought—it felt like they really put some effort into creating a fun experience.

And of course, I had to take a picture of the little rock outside that said:

“Just a sign in case you need one.” ❤️

If you’re looking for a local spot to try something different on a Saturday or Sunday morning, give Rock House brunch a shot.

Have you tried it yet? What’s your favorite brunch spot in Arkansas?

Weekend inspection tip: Don’t forget to take time off and enjoy local businesses too!

Kim and I checked out the new brunch menu at Rock House in Searcy this weekend and had a great time. The food was creative, the drinks were fun, and the atmosphere was fantastic.
