For the first time in years, pedestrian deaths in California are declining. In Kern County, they dropped 46.5% from 2024 to 2025. That is real progress. 💙

Still, attorney Tanya Alsheikh puts it in perspective: “That’s still 25 families that have to say goodbye to somebody just because there was a lack of safety protocols when somebody was operating a motor vehicle.”

School is back. And our streets are more dangerous than ever this time of year. 👇

Every morning, thousands of kids across Kern County walk to school, wait at bus stops, and cross intersections. And every year, back to school season brings a spike in pedestrian accidents.
Attorney Matt Clark breaks down what drivers need to know, what parents should teach their kids, and what your rights are if something goes wrong.

Three things every child should know before crossing a street:
Always cross at marked crosswalks.
Make eye contact with the driver before stepping off the curb.
Never assume a car is going to stop. Wait until it actually does.

For drivers: slow down in school zones. Put the phone down. A child can step off a curb in a second. At 25 mph you may have time to stop. At 45 you do not.

They hand-make quilts for NICU babies, children in shelters, and families in crisis across Kern County. We went to meet them. 💙

We spent the morning with the Cottonpatch Quilters of Kern County, a local nonprofit whose members hand-make pet beds, teddy bears, comfort quilts, and pillowcases for hospitals, shelters, and kids across Kern County.

For more than 40 years, this guild has quietly shown up for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. NICU babies. Children in shelters. Families in crisis. Every item made by hand. Every one given with care.

Their annual quilt auction and luncheon is coming up on Oct. 10 at the Woman's Club of Bakersfield featuring a live auction, silent auction, shopping, raffle baskets, and a catered luncheon. More info at cottonpatchquiltguild.org.
