I'm all for preserving Austin's older buildings, but the Hobby Building downtown, while certainly a unique piece of 1980s postmodern architecture, is not one that will be missed. The vacant state government office complex is now fenced off, suggesting it's on its way to becoming demolished. The end of an era, but I imagine anything that replaces it will be a welcome improvement.

The Drag sure has changed since the days I was at The University of Texas at Austin. Fancy high-rise apartments, a Target, and now talk of possibly removing cars and making it part of the city's upcoming light rail system. Might cause some traffic issues in the short term, but I could see it being a welcome update for students and old alumni alike! 😉

All of us who love Austin's parks and green spaces shouldn't be too concerned about Austin becoming a concrete jungle. Through the city's parkland dedication ordinance, new residential developments are required to set aside land for a park or pay a fee to be used by the City of Austin Government to acquire land or develop park facilities. Austin currently has nearly 17,000 acres of parkland spread across about 30 parks, and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department has been adding almost 20 parks a year! Who knows? One of next year's new parks could soon become your favorite... and you may have a new condo building to thank for it. 😉

With the official start of summer upon us, you might think I'm crazy to recommend one of my favorite ramen spots in town, but hear me out - Ramen Tatsu-ya, which is now basically an Austin institution, is bringing back its summer special: spicy chilled ramen. A brothless noodle dish combining cucumber and tomatoes, citrus soy dressing, and chili oil creates a simultaneously spicy and cooling bowl. Lions Municipal Golf Course - "Muny" to all of us locals - has been a revered public course and sacred green space in the middle of the city for nearly 100 years. Since 1936, the city has leased 140 acres for Muny from the The University of Texas at Austin, but efforts are underway that could result in the land being sold and redeveloped. The Save Muny campaign, notably backed by Ben Crenshaw, is working hard to preserve the course for future generations. 🙌 This excellent article from Golfweek provides an overview of the situation and reasons for why it's important to save municipal golf courses around the country.
