Allensworth celebrates Women’s History Month by honoring women in the construction industry. With a well-balanced team and a woman co-managing partner, Allensworth knows that having our team of women construction lawyers strengthens our profession, our industry, and the clients we serve.

Last week, the Women in Construction Law networking event at the 38th Annual Construction Law Conference was a powerful reminder of how much the Women in Construction Law section has grown over the years. What was once a section of just a handful of women now has dozens of women all across Texas practicing construction law and taking time to network together before the annual conference.

Here’s to the women who have paved the way and those shaping the future of construction law!

🎉 Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence: William R. Allensworth Honored as a Texas Tech Law Distinguished Alumnus 🎉

Allensworth is thrilled to share that our founder, William R. Allensworth, has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the Texas Tech University School of Law! This prestigious honor reflects William’s trailblazing career in construction law and his meaningful contributions to the legal profession.

In conjunction with this recognition, the William R. Allensworth '74 Endowed Scholarship has been established to support Texas Tech Law students pursuing careers in construction law—ensuring William’s dedication to mentorship and education continues for generations to come.

William’s influence on the industry is profound: from arguing cases at every level of the Texas and Federal courts (including the U.S. Supreme Court) to shaping the next generation of construction lawyers through teaching, writing, and leadership. His legacy continues to inspire all of us at Allensworth.

As we wrap up 2024 and kick off 2025, our team is reflecting on a year of growth, achievement, and community involvement. Here are some 2024 highlights:

◼️ Welcoming Hailey Dodson, Caroline K. Gorman, Sarah Brewer, Rocio Lozano, Emilia Garanzuay, and Avery Bertagna to the firm!

◼️ Expanding our services to better serve our clients, including water law, insurance and risk management, and mediation and arbitration services.

◼️ Our attorneys sharing their knowledge on some big stages, such as: Will Allensworth’s Case Law Update and Karly Houchin’s Assignments presentations at the 37th Annual Construction Law Conference; Will Allensworth, Karly Houchin, and Jason T. Hill’s presentations at RuralWaterCon, and Matthew Ryan moderating the keynote panel at the Fall Meeting of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law!

◼️ Engaging with the community through board service and nonprofits, like: Whitney Knight serving as Chair of the Downtown Austin Alliance this year; Amy Emerson serving on the Advisory Board of ULI Austin, and Karly Houchin being appointed to the Board of Directors for the SAFE Alliance Austin.

◼️ Contributing to the legal community through leadership roles, including: Will Allensworth serving on the State Bar of Texas Construction Law Section Council; Karly Houchin serving as Young Lawyer Representative for both the State Bar of Texas Construction Law Section and Insurance Law Section; Matthew Ryan continuing his service on the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law Division 3 (Design) Steering Committee; Matt Roland’s election to the Austin Bar Association’s Construction Law Section Council; and Caroline Hall’s appointment to the State Bar of Texas Women in the Profession Committee and continued service on the Travis County Women Lawyers Foundation Board of Directors.

Allensworth’s Co-Managing Partner Amy Emerson recently volunteered as a facilitator for ULI Austin's UrbanPlan Exchange, helping local leaders understand the complexities of urban development and land use.

As a member of ULI Austin's Advisory and Membership Committees, Amy continues to demonstrate Allensworth's commitment to our community and the construction industry. Her involvement with ULI Austin allows us to stay at the forefront of real estate trends and contribute to sustainable urban growth.

The Basic Course in Texas Construction Law is currently underway, with our very own Karly Houchin, Partner at Allensworth, kicking off the event with her opening remarks as Course Director!

Taking place today and tomorrow at The Westin Galleria Dallas, this two-day course brings together legal and construction industry professionals eager to deepen their understanding of Texas construction law. A fantastic lineup of expert speakers will share their knowledge, insights, and practical advice on a wide range of topics, covering: top cases every construction lawyer should know, causes of actions, project documents, contract termination, arbitration, mediation, public procurement, insurance basics, lien and bond claims, tips on avoiding malpractice, and so much more!

This event promises to be a great opportunity to not only enhance knowledge, but also to connect with peers. We’re excited for the engaging discussions and valuable connections that will be made over these two days!

🌆 What an inspiring morning at Urban Land Institute Austin’s October Breakfast! 🌆

We were proud to serve as underwriter for this engaging discussion on the transformation of Austin’s Convention Center, an ambitious project set to reshape the downtown landscape. Here are some of our key takeaways:

✨ The design will re-energize the area by moving exhibit halls underground, freeing up street-level space for retail, restaurants, and inviting public spaces—creating a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly grid right in the heart of downtown.
🏨 During renovations, the City and Visit Austin are adopting an innovative “campus-style” approach, working with local hotels to gather up ballrooms and conference spaces to maintain seamless conference services.
🚀 Looking forward, the new convention center is slated to open in 2029—a future we’re excited to support as our city continues to grow and thrive.
