The Austin City Council is considering a proposal from Austin's failed animal-shelter manager Don Bland to euthanize more animals, euthanize animals faster, and euthanize animals without publicly reporting their deaths. The proposal is Item #2 on next week's City Council agenda. If you are an animal lover, please email the Austin City Council and ask them to vote "NO" on Item #2. You can email all of them at once through this link: https://www.austintexas.gov/email/all-council-members

Fostering saves lives!

‘It was a really scary situation. Time was critical,’ said Chris Cushna, who fostered Moose for 2 nights. ‘It’s amazing that no one got hurt.’

What an incredible honor to read that I helped inspire the remarkable Mia Aukland, Australia's leading animal advocate, to change the world for her nation's companion animals. I'm deeply proud to know you, Mia.

Although excited to welcome Lucy into her home, Mia Aukland’s experience adopting a dog in South Australia has prompted her call for change. Read more.

It wasn’t all that long ago that animal advocates were called crazy for thinking that animal shelters shouldn’t perform euthanasia-upon-request for surrendered pets, but should instead make a case-by-case decision as to what is best for each impounded animal. That was then and this is now. Here, the Washington Post features a love story of a geriatric dog in a new loving home.

“As soon as I saw her face, I was like okay, she’s the one that needs to come to my house,” said veterinarian Amy Kidd, who only adopts senior dogs.

It’s the season of giving! Today, my wife and I made our annual donation to Austin Pets Alive!, America’s best animal-welfare organization. Their name may be local to Austin, but their impact is nationwide. APA has revolutionized animal sheltering— saving animals that animal-welfare organizations previously would not have saved and teaching shelters across America how to do the same. And in the next month or so, APA will save its 100,000th pet from euthanasia at an animal shelter. 100,000!

So please join me in making a donation to APA to help them keep saving even more lives. Donations are double matched today!!

Austin Pets Alive! is not your average shelter. We maintain comprehensive, innovative programs designed to save the animals most at risk for euthanasia.

Last week, the Austin City Council voted to extend Austin Pets Alive!’s lease in downtown Austin while allowing APA to extend its lifesaving mission beyond Central Texas. I spoke in favor of the decision. But the most effective speaker, by a wide margin, was a veteran named Greg. Greg spoke about how Austin Pets Alive has changed his life for the better. He spoke about how he had tried every prescription and every therapy to recover from the traumatic stress he had endured serving our country. And he spoke about how Austin Pets Alive, its community of animal lovers, and the animals themselves, had helped him heal, recover, and find new strength and meaning. No one could have said it better. So here’s to Greg, and all of the veterans who have served this country and continue to make us better people and better communities. Thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do to serve.

In 2008, my wife and I joined Dr. Ellen Jefferson and a few friends to start an animal rescue group, Austin Pets Alive!, which has since saved more than 80,000 pets at risk of euthanasia. Our first foster dog, Lizzie, was a little shepherd puppy set to be euthanized by our local shelter. She went to a wonderful family and lived a long life. This week, they had to say goodbye. Rest easy, sweet girl.
