Across the country — whether it’s Aurora police kneeling on, choking, and injuring teens during today’s protests and street actions, or federal agents fatally shooting Minneapolis residents — the same pattern keeps repeating: law enforcement agencies unleash violence, then retroactively construct narratives that frame their victims as threats.

In Minneapolis, a federal immigration agent shot and killed Renée Good as she tried to drive away, and days later federal agents shot and killed ICU nurse Alex Pretti amid heightened enforcement efforts; authorities immediately claimed both posed imminent danger or resisted, even as bystander video and subsequent reporting showed Pretti holding a phone and being wrestled to the ground before being shot and raised questions about the official account.

This mirrors how abuses against minors are excused with “he was resisting” or “we had to subdue him,” turning so-called discretionary force into official justification. What binds these moments is not isolated misconduct but a systemic impulse to manufacture permission for brutality whenever law enforcement encounters bodies it has deemed “undesirable” — children, protestors, migrants, or civilians — reinforcing a militarized culture of law enforcement impunity that must be dismantled.
