NEWS RELEASE: Carteret County Encourages Residents to Prepare for Winter Weather This Weekend

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (January 29, 2026) – Carteret County Emergency Services is continuing to monitor evolving weather conditions following a Winter Storm Watch issued by the National Weather Service. Confidence has increased that a major winter storm is possible across eastern North Carolina, including Carteret County, this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, forecast trends continue to point toward the potential for significant snowfall across the region, with the possibility of MAJOR impacts. While the storm is still developing, there is potential for accumulations that could result in hazardous travel conditions, periods of reduced visibility, and disruptions to daily activities. Should these conditions materialize, extreme cold temperatures following the storm could allow impacts to last well into next week.

The National Weather Service is also forecasting the potential for Storm Force winds, particularly along the coast. These winds could contribute to moderate to locally significant coastal flooding on both the oceanside and soundside in vulnerable areas. Localized blizzard conditions are also possible for Downeast Carteret County. Dangerous marine conditions are expected across the coastal waters and sounds, and mariners are advised to closely monitor conditions and adjust plans ahead of the storm.

Carteret County Emergency Services is working closely with local, state, and federal partners, including the National Weather Service, and will adjust operations as conditions change. Residents are encouraged to use the next few days to review storm preparations, especially in case travel becomes difficult. Households should focus on the 4 P’s of winter preparedness: people, pets, plants, and pipes. Check in on family and neighbors, particularly those who are older or more vulnerable, and make sure everyone is dressed warmly in layers. Keep pets and animals safe by bringing them indoors, protect outdoor plants, and take steps to prevent frozen pipes.

Residents should also review their emergency supplies, including food, water, medications, and any items needed for health and safety. Ensure an adequate supply of prescription medications and necessary medical equipment. Make sure your vehicle is stocked with essentials like blankets, flashlights, and a cell phone charger. Having these items ready now can make a big difference if conditions worsen.

If impacts occur, travel may become dangerous. Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and remain at home if conditions deteriorate. Road conditions may remain hazardous even after precipitation ends due to continued cold temperatures. Residents should also be ready for the possibility of extended power outages by identifying safe heating options and having extra food and water on hand.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local media, the National Weather Service, and Carteret County Emergency Services. Residents can sign up for Carteret County CodeRED to receive real-time severe weather alerts specific to their location. Updates will also be shared through the County’s website, social media platforms, and local news outlets. For the latest weather forecasts and advisories, visit weather.gov/mhx. Additional preparedness information is available at ReadyNC.gov.

Residents should call 911 only for emergencies. Power outages should be reported directly to utility providers so restoration efforts can begin when conditions are safe. Carteret County Emergency Services will continue to provide updates as forecasts become clearer and additional information becomes available.
