This has been a very feel good week for my Estate Planning practice. I just finished up the signing of documents for an 82 year old woman whom I represented in 1993 for a previous Will and a personal injury case. She lives in Macon and wanted to come to Atlanta to see me to update her documents. I tried to convince her that there were plenty of good lawyers in Macon, but she insisted that I was the only lawyer she could trust. So her daughter drove this morning from Henry County to pick her up in Macon and drive her here to arrive at 11:00. They just left at 3:00, everything explained and signed, and everyone laughing!

On Tuesday, I had two sisters come in to sign their documents, ages 79 and 75. The 79 year old sent me this note on Wednesday: “Dear Kathleen, thank you for helping us with a difficult subject. We procrastinated on this for so long thinking that it was an unpleasant and tiresome task. You made it all easy and fun. I will abide by all your kind advice, which has been duly noted. Take care and stay witty and funny. It is not everybody who can be funny. It takes a sharp mind and a free spirit. All the best,”

Her 75 year old sister wrote: “It was great seeing you the other day. I want to thank you for your time, for your professional assistance, and for your patience in preparing and helping us out with the legal documents. It was a great pleasure working with you. Wishing you all the best, I remain, Sincerely,”

I think I will come back again next week and practice some more law. This is rather fun!

I enjoyed speaking this afternoon to the DeKalb Estate Planning Council, an organization of estate planning attorneys, CPA's, and financial advisors that has been in existence since the 1970's. We discussed marriage and parental rights issues facing same s*x couples with estate planning. A good time was had by all!

I have the best clients ever. Recently during a Will signing for a couple, they mentioned that they were heading to Prince Edward Island in Canada. I started babbling about my favorite "Anne of Green Gables" which is set in PEI. This week I got a package from them with a note that said that on their trip they were thinking of me, and sent me a postcard and kitchen towel from the "Kindred Spirits Collection" that they bought while in PEI. How totally thoughtful of them both!!

Today is the final day of my 8 year term as the only openly LGBT member on the State Bar Board of Governors (160 lawyers elected from across Georgia to set policy for Georgia’s lawyers). It was an honor to be appointed for a two year term in 2011 by Past President Robin Frazer Clark to make sure the “good old boys” across the state knew there were LGBT people in their midst. In 2013 I challenged an incumbent and won the Atlanta Circuit, Post 3 seat. After 24 years of Bar Leadership, I felt it was time to step aside and make more time for family, friends, clients and sick kitties. Lisa Liang will now take up the position as the next openly LGBT Board member, and will be sure to attend State Bar meetings with her wife, Judge Alex Manning.

Thank you to my partner, Dyana Bagby for being patient with all my time away for State Bar duties, and for attending the Gala events with me, even though I knew she would rather have been elsewhere. Thanks Robin Frazer Clark for appointing me, Seth Kirschenbaum and his wife Karla for taking me under their wings to make sure I knew where all the social events were held, President-Elect Dawn Jones and all my GABWA “sisters” for making me feel so welcome and included, Past President Ken Shigley Sr. for appointing me to my first committee, Past President Patrise Perkins-Hooker for appointing me to way too many committees since she wanted to make sure there was an openly LGBT person on every State Bar Committee, and to Dawn Jones who asked me to give the first nominating speech for her when she decided to run for her first officer position and she won in spite of my nomination! She will make an amazing State Bar of Georgia President when her term as President begins next year. I also know that Darrell Sutton will make us all proud as he takes over as State Bar President tomorrow, as Judge Ken Hodges finishes up his last day as President this weekend. It has been an amazing ride, and I know I will miss it, but look forward to other new adventures in the years to come! Thank you for the opportunity to serve. It has been an honor.

Have Notary Seal and Pens, Will Travel.
Fingers crossed for my client who has heart surgery in the morning. Traveled this afternoon to the hospital ICU to update his Estate Planning documents before the surgery. His co-workers came by to be his witnesses. When they tried this surgery last year, he died on the table and they brought him back. Hoping for a better result this time.

Sweep the H***h river cleanup, April 6 with the Chase Professional folks from my building, three of whom witness Wills and other documents for my clients. Picked up bunches of trash from the side of the Chattahoochee River and trails, and got to ride in the back of a pickup truck!

Just watched "On the basis of S*x" movie about the life of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. in 1983 I had been accepted to law school at Rutgers Law School in New Jersey where she had been a law school professor. Rutgers was my first choice of the law schools where I had been accepted because of its Women's Rights Litigation program. But at the time I had to make a choice. My son Robin was only 2 and a half years old, and a dioxin dump was just discovered nearby. Knowing I could never raise my son in a place that was so environmentally toxic, I chose to attend Emory Law School. He came first in my life. And as a result, I have had the privilege of knowing so many amazing and awesome people. Have I ever wondered how my life would have been different had I chosen Rutgers over Emory? Not until this movie. But you know what? Emory was the right choice for me.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
