So today, my dad is traveling with me to Fresno, California, where he will be my plus 1 as I deliver the keynote speech for the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce’s 10th Annual Women’s Conference. 🌺

In 2014, when I told my dad that I was going to start my own law firm right out of law school…his fear emerged. Fear out of the deepest love and concern for his baby girl. Fear that I would struggle and have a hard time as a young, inexperienced law firm owner.

In my heart of hearts, I knew he meant well…but starting a law firm right out of law school was just unheard of and he wanted to protect his daughter from making a big mistake. Although he was very worried, his love and support never wavered.

Now, he gets to enjoy the fruits of my life-changing decision. Who knew that starting my law firm at 26 years old would evolve into cross-country speaking contracts with first-class travel for two.

It’s a full circle moment. And with great admiration and joy, my dad said to me, “you proved me wrong, daughter.”

Paul wrote his letter to the people of Philippi (the book of Philippians in the Bible) while he was imprisoned. Before that, he established the church at Philippi during one of his missionaries. So Paul, preached the gospel, encourage everyone to follow Jesus, and then ended up in prison himself.

Lesson: Just because you are a leader of people and are not currently/always in a fruitful season doesn’t mean you’re not qualified. 🙌🏽

1️⃣ Determine if it’s actually confusingly similar

2️⃣ Determine who started using it first

3️⃣ See if they have a federal trademark

4️⃣ Consult with/hire a trademark lawyer

5️⃣ Send cease-and-desist letter to infringer (if lawyer confirms your superior rights)

6️⃣ Send takedown notices to digital platforms (ie YouTube, Facebook, Wix, Shopify, etc.) if lawyer confirms your superior rights

7️⃣ Be prepared to defend your brand (trademark opposition, cancellation, litigation)

8️⃣ Rebrand, if lawyer determines that the other user has superior rights that will limit your business growth.

When you call, the first thing they ask you is for your name, email address, and phone number.

When I told her my name, she said “Oh, one of our favorites!”

People with a desire for entrepreneurship often sell themselves short, thinking they can’t make it as an entrepreneur. So they settle for jobs they don’t love or dread going to, knowing they have a bigger calling.

Have you ever thought about how much your time is worth per hour?

I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a potential client, and right after the call, she secured a $3,300 service. So math tells us that my value per hour is AT LEAST $9,900 per hour.

Kam is home sick today, so I have a sick 5-year-old home while I have six consultations, coaching calls, and meetings between 9:15am - 4pm…pretty much back to back.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am grateful to be able to keep my son home with me when he’s sick. Grateful to be able to work from home for the past 7 years. Grateful to have the power to reschedule any of those appointments if my son needs my attention. Grateful that I can be the one to care for him.

God knew what he was doing when he convicted me to start my own law firm right out of law school back in 2014 (my second year of law school).

And God is telling YOU to do something shocking and amazing, too. Something nontraditional. Something you’re a bit scared to do.
