I had the opportunity to join AILA’s Global Migration Section to visit the border wall and experience life in Tijuana, Mexico. What an experience.
Seeing the wall in person — the construction of the double wall, and the section built out into the ocean — was mind-blowing. Standing there really brought to life what so many of my clients have had to see and navigate. As a group, we also enjoyed some excellent food in Mexico.
Returning to the U.S. was a challenge I didn’t expect, and it gave me a small window into why so many clients are anxious about crossing — even as a U.S. citizen, I waited 1.5 hours to re-enter the country.
Will I go back to Tijuana? Absolutely.
Does the U.S. need to do better? Absolutely.
