“You are not starting from nothing. You are starting from everything you already are.”

isn’t just an immigration attorney at Garvish Immigration Law Group, she’s an immigrant herself.

And when she wrote her love letter to immigrants, she wrote it from that place. From lived experience. From her own fear, grief, and courage.

Because she’s been there. And she made it to the other side.

This is why representation matters in immigration law. Your attorney shouldn’t just know your case. They should know your journey.

Two countries. Two homes.

has spent more than half her life in the US, but Colombia never stopped feeling like home either. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Does this ever get old?”
asked .garvish that question after her very first case approval, and the answer has never changed. Every single win still feels just as amazing.

That’s what happens when your work is personal. When you’re an immigrant yourself fighting for other immigrants. Every approval is so much more than a case closed.

“Home is wherever my people are.”

What does an immigrant look like?

Most people have one image in their mind. And Alison, a Canadian immigrant, doesn’t fit it.

White skin. American accent. Fluent English. And yet she’s just as much an immigrant as anyone else who has chosen to make this country home.

The stereotypes we hold about who “counts” as an immigrant say a lot about the biases we haven’t confronted yet.

Immigration isn’t one story. It isn’t one face. It isn’t one accent.

Who challenged your idea of what an immigrant looks like?

“Alien.” “Illegal.” They’re not just words. 💔

They’re a choice to stop seeing people as people. As human beings with beating hearts, beautiful stories, and journeys worthy of love and care.

As immigration attorneys, we see it every day. The way language shapes how we treat people. And right now, a lot of that language is stripping away our humanity.
Immigrants make this country diverse. They make it amazing. And every single one of them has a story.

How much do you think the language we use shapes the way we treat people? 👇

I dive into this with our most recent guest, Alison, in the new episode of Love Letters to Immigrants.
