Meningitis: when the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed.

Meningitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and other conditions. Symptoms can develop quickly and may include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, sensitivity to light, and confusion.

Because some forms of meningitis can become life-threatening, knowing the signs and seeking medical care promptly matters.

On World Meningitis Day, take a closer look at what happens inside the body with Nucleus Medical Media's Viral Meningitis animation.

Another college football weekend, another reminder of just how much the ACL matters.

Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s win over Virginia Tech, ending his season.

The anterior cruciate ligament helps stabilize the knee during movements like cutting, pivoting, and sudden changes in direction—all fundamental to football.

šŸŽ„ Learn more about what happens when the ACL is torn in this Nucleus Medical Media animation.

For Aaron Judge, getting back to October baseball isn’t just about swinging a bat. It’s about being able to run.

The Yankees slugger is dealing with a moderate-grade strain of the right soleus muscle, part of the calf that plays an important role in walking, running, and pushing off the ground.

For a baseball player, that matters every time he accelerates out of the batter’s box, rounds the bases, or tracks down a ball in the field.

Week 36: Baby’s getting ready—and so is the skull! šŸ‘¶šŸ¦“

At 36 weeks, your baby is getting closer and closer to meeting the outside world. Most babies are now about 18½ inches long and weigh around 6 pounds, although there’s plenty of normal variation.

Baby’s bones continue to mature, but the bones of the skull are a little different. They aren’t fused together yet. The flexible spaces between the skull bones allow the head to change shape as it moves through the birth canal—and they also leave room for the brain to continue growing after birth.

Inside the womb, baby is also continuing to put on weight and practice important skills like breathing and swallowing. The lungs are getting ready for that first breath.

And with only a few weeks to go, there’s definitely a lot happening in preparation for the big day!

Your water broke! Now what? šŸ’¦šŸ‘¶

Movies love the dramatic gush—but in real life, your water breaking can look very different. It may be a sudden release of fluid, or it may be a slow, steady trickle.

ā€œBreaking your waterā€ means the amniotic sac surrounding the baby has ruptured. This can happen before labor begins or during labor, and it’s one of the signs that birth may be approaching.

If you think your water has broken, contact your healthcare provider for guidance. They can help determine whether the fluid is amniotic fluid and advise you on what to do next.

And no, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to rush to the hospital that second. šŸ˜‰

Next up: the stages of labor—and what actually happens once labor gets underway.

A closer look at infant hip dysplasia. 🦓

One of our most-viewed medical illustrations recently highlights developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)—a condition in which the hip joint doesn’t develop normally, allowing the femoral head to fit loosely or slip out of the hip socket.

DDH can range from mild looseness of the joint to a complete hip dislocation. Early detection and treatment can help support normal hip development and reduce the risk of complications later in life.

At Nucleus Medical Media, we use detailed medical illustration to make complex anatomy easier to understand—for healthcare professionals, patients, and learners.
